4. Installation
This camera is designed for use with a compatible Swann NVR system (e.g., NVR-8580 Series). It utilizes Power over Ethernet (PoE) for simplified wiring.
4.1 Mounting the Camera
- Choose a Location: Select a location that provides the desired viewing angle (93 degrees) and is within reach of the provided 60ft Ethernet cable to your NVR. Consider areas where the camera can be securely mounted and has a clear line of sight. The camera is suitable for ceiling mount.
- Prepare the Surface: Use the camera as a template to mark the positions for drilling screw holes.
- Drill Holes: Drill pilot holes for the mounting screws. If mounting on drywall or masonry, insert the provided wall plugs.
- Secure the Camera: Route the Ethernet cable through the mounting surface or along the wall. Attach the camera base to the surface using the provided mounting screws.
- Adjust Angle: Loosen the adjustment screws on the dome to position the camera lens for the desired coverage. Tighten the screws once the angle is set.
4.2 Connecting to the NVR
- Connect Ethernet Cable: Plug one end of the Cat5e Ethernet cable into the camera's Ethernet port.
- Connect to NVR: Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into an available PoE port on your Swann NVR. The NVR will provide power to the camera and receive video data.
- Power On NVR: Ensure your NVR is powered on and properly configured. The camera should automatically be detected and begin transmitting video.
5. Operation
Once installed and connected to your Swann NVR, the camera's features can be accessed and managed through the NVR interface and the Swann Security app.
5.1 Live View and Recording
- Access live video feeds directly from your NVR monitor or via the Swann Security app on your mobile device.
- The camera records in 4K Ultra HD resolution. Recording settings (continuous, motion-triggered, scheduled) are configured on the NVR.
5.2 Motion and Thermal Sensing (True Detect)
- The camera's True Detect PIR thermal sensing technology identifies heat signatures from people and large objects like cars. This minimizes false alerts from environmental factors such as wind-blown leaves.
- When motion and heat are detected, the NVR can be configured to trigger recording and send push notifications to your mobile device via the Swann Security app.
5.3 Night Vision
- The camera automatically switches to infrared (IR) night vision in low-light conditions, providing black and white video up to 150 feet (45 meters).
- In some low-light scenarios, the camera may provide color night vision.
5.4 Audio Recording
- The integrated microphone captures audio, providing an additional layer of information for surveillance footage. Audio recording settings are managed through the NVR.
5.5 Smart Home Integration
- When connected to a compatible NVR (e.g., NVR-8580), the camera can integrate with voice assistants.
- Use voice commands with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant to view camera feeds on compatible devices like Echo Show, Echo Spot, 4K Fire TV, or Chromecast.
6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and longevity of your security camera.
- Cleaning: Periodically clean the camera lens and housing with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust, dirt, or water spots that may obstruct the view. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
- Cable Inspection: Regularly check the Ethernet cable for any signs of wear, damage, or loose connections, especially for outdoor installations.
- Firmware Updates: Keep your NVR and camera firmware updated. Check the Swann support website for the latest firmware versions and instructions. Firmware updates often include performance improvements and security enhancements.
- Environmental Factors: Ensure the camera is not obstructed by growing foliage or new structures that could block its field of view or trigger false motion alerts.
7. Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your Swann camera.
7.1 No Video Feed / Camera Offline
- Check NVR Connection: Ensure the Ethernet cable is securely connected to both the camera and a functioning PoE port on your NVR.
- NVR Compatibility: This camera requires a compatible Swann NVR system (e.g., NVR-8580 Series). It is not a standalone camera and cannot be directly accessed without an NVR.
- Power Cycle: Restart your NVR to re-establish communication with the camera.
- Cable Integrity: Inspect the Ethernet cable for any physical damage. Try a different cable if available.
7.2 Excessive False Motion Alerts
- Adjust Sensitivity: Access your NVR settings to reduce the motion detection sensitivity.
- Configure Motion Zones: Define specific areas within the camera's view where motion detection should be active, excluding areas with frequent irrelevant movement (e.g., busy roads, trees swaying in the wind).
- True Detect: The camera uses PIR thermal sensing to reduce false alerts. Ensure the camera is positioned to best utilize this feature, focusing on areas where human or vehicle heat signatures are expected.
7.3 Poor Night Vision Quality
- Clean Lens: Ensure the camera lens is clean and free from smudges or dirt.
- IR Obstructions: Check for any objects close to the camera that might reflect the infrared light, causing glare or washed-out images.
- Ambient Light: While the camera has night vision, extreme darkness or competing light sources can affect performance.
