- Keep batteries away from children and dispose of them properly.
Installation Guide
This section provides a step-by-step guide for installing your Kwikset SmartCode 888 electronic deadbolt. For a visual guide, please refer to the official installation video below.
Video 1: Official Kwikset SmartCode 888 Installation Guide. This video demonstrates the complete installation process for the electronic deadbolt.
Before You Begin
- Measure your door's backset, cross bore, and thickness to ensure compatibility.
- Gather all required tools: Phillips head screwdriver, 4 AA batteries (included), and potentially a hammer and wood block for drive-in latches.
Installation Steps
- Adjust the Backset: Extend the bolt by rotating the D-shaped crank. Hold the latch in front of the door hole. If the D-shaped crank is centered, no adjustment is needed. If not, twist the latch to the larger setting.
- Install the Latch and Strike: Ensure the 'UP' marking on the latch faces upward. Install the latch on the door with the provided short wood screws. If using a drive-in latch, use a hammer and wood block to tap it into position. Re-extend the latch bolt. Attach the strike plate to the door frame using the two long screws closest to the door jamb and two short screws.
- Prepare the Exterior Keypad: If your door's bore hole diameter is 2-1/8 inches, attach the provided adapter ring to the keypad. For 1-1/2 inch bore holes, the adapter ring is not needed.
- Install the Exterior Assembly and Mounting Plate: Route the cable underneath the latch. Insert the torque blade through the latch, aligning its D-shape with the crank. Firmly position the exterior assembly onto the door. Thread the cable and torque blade through the center hole of the mounting plate and position it flush against the door. Slide the cable into the small notch at the bottom. Secure the mounting plate to the door and exterior assembly with the mounting bolts. Caution: Do not over-tighten. Insert the key and test the latch for smooth operation. Adjust mounting screws if necessary. Remove the key and ensure the latch bolt is extended.
- Disassemble the Interior Assembly: Ensure the turn piece is in the vertical position and remove the cover. Verify the turn piece shaft is oriented as shown in the video. Remove and set aside the battery pack for later installation.
- Install the Interior Assembly: Align the white arrows on the two cable connectors and firmly push them together. Ensure cables are clear of pinching and route excess cable flat across the bottom of the interior housing. Align the torque blade with the turn piece shaft and push the interior assembly flush against the door. Insert and tighten the small screws to secure the interior assembly onto the mounting plate.
- Install the Batteries and Perform the Door Handing Process: Load 4 AA batteries into the battery pack, ensuring correct polarity. With the door open, insert the battery pack into the interior assembly. The SmartCode mechanism will automatically drive the bolt in and out several times to determine proper handing. This step is crucial for proper operation.
- Perform the Inclusion Process (Z-Wave): Initiate the inclusion process at your smart home controller. When prompted, press button 'A' on the lock one time to include it in your system. Refer to your controller's instructions for more information.
- Install the Interior Cover: Install the interior cover over the interior assembly with three screws. The window on the interior cover is locked by default to prevent tampering. If desired, you may remove the security screw from the window so it can slide up for quick access to batteries and buttons while the cover is installed.

Maintenance
Battery Replacement
The SmartCode 888 operates on 4 AA batteries. When the batteries are low, the lock will provide an indicator. To replace, slide up the interior cover (if the security screw was removed) or remove the cover, then replace the battery pack. Ensure correct polarity. After replacing, the lock may perform a door handing process again.
SmartKey Re-Keying
The lock features SmartKey Security re-key technology, allowing you to re-key the lock yourself in seconds to match an existing Kwikset key. This is useful if you have recently moved or wish to use fewer keys for multiple locks.

Troubleshooting
- Latch not operating smoothly: If the latch does not operate smoothly after installation, adjust the mounting screws on the interior assembly. Ensure the torque blade is correctly aligned with the latch crank.
- Z-Wave network connection issues: If the lock loses network connection, ensure your Z-Wave hub is within range and consider using Z-Wave repeaters if necessary. Re-initiate the inclusion process if the connection is lost.
- Lock not responding: Check the battery level. Replace all four AA batteries if they are low or depleted. Ensure batteries are inserted with correct polarity.
- Keypad not lighting up: This model features a backlit keypad. If it's not lighting up, check battery levels.
