2. Setup

2.1 Battery Installation

The Sharp EL-531TH calculator requires one AAA battery for operation. A battery is typically included with the product.

  1. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the calculator.
  2. Slide the cover off in the direction indicated by the arrow.
  3. Insert one AAA battery, ensuring the correct polarity (+/-) as marked inside the compartment.
  4. Replace the battery compartment cover until it clicks securely into place.

2.2 Initial Power On

After installing the battery, press the ON/C key to turn on the calculator. The display should show "0" or a similar initial state. If the display does not appear, recheck the battery installation or replace the battery.

3. Operating Instructions

3.1 Basic Calculations

Enter numbers using the numeric keypad and perform operations using the +, -, ×, ÷ keys. Press = to get the result.

Example: To calculate 15 + 7:

  3. Press 7

3.2 Direct Algebraic Logic (D.A.L.)

The D.A.L. system allows you to input equations exactly as they are written. For example, to calculate sin(30):

  1. Ensure the calculator is in DEG (degrees) mode. (Press MODE then select DEG if needed).
  2. Press sin
  3. Press 3 0
  4. Press = (Result: 0.5)

3.3 Function Keys

Many keys have secondary functions, accessed by pressing the 2nd F key first. The secondary functions are typically printed above the primary key function.

Example: To calculate x² (square of a number):

  1. Enter the number, e.g., 5
  2. Press (Result: 25)

Example: To calculate √x (square root of a number):

  1. Press
  2. Enter the number, e.g., 2 5
  3. Press = (Result: 5)

3.4 Memory Functions

The calculator includes memory functions to store and recall values.

  • STO: Stores the displayed value into a memory variable (A-F, X, Y, M).
