5. Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for optimal performance and safety. Follow these general steps:

  1. Mounting: Choose a dry, well-ventilated location in your vehicle, away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Secure the amplifier using the provided mounting screws. Ensure adequate space around the amplifier for air circulation.
  2. Power Connection:
    • Connect the main power cable (typically 8-gauge or larger, depending on total system power) from the vehicle's positive battery terminal to the amplifier's "+12V" terminal. Install an in-line fuse holder (not supplied) within 18 inches (45 cm) of the battery.
    • Connect the ground cable (same gauge as power cable) from the amplifier's "GND" terminal to a clean, unpainted metal surface on the vehicle chassis. Ensure a solid electrical connection.
    • Connect the remote turn-on wire from your head unit's remote output to the amplifier's "REM" terminal. This wire turns the amplifier on and off with your head unit.
  3. Audio Input Connection:
    • Connect RCA cables from your head unit's pre-amp outputs to the amplifier's "INPUT" RCA jacks (Front and Rear).
    • The amplifier's input sensitivity ranges from 150mV to 8V, making it compatible with most aftermarket and some factory head units.
  4. Speaker Connection:
    • Connect your speakers to the amplifier's speaker terminals. Pay close attention to polarity (+ and -).
    • For 4-channel operation, connect one speaker per channel.
    • For bridged operation (e.g., for a subwoofer), connect speakers to the designated "BRIDGE" terminals as indicated on the amplifier (refer to Figure 4.2). The amplifier is stable down to 2 Ohms in stereo mode and 4 Ohms in bridged mode.
  5. Initial Setup: Before turning on the system, double-check all connections. Set all gain controls to minimum and crossover settings to "FULL" or a suitable starting point.

6. Operating Instructions

Once installed, adjust the amplifier settings for optimal sound quality.

  • Gain Control (GAIN): This matches the amplifier's input sensitivity to your head unit's output. Start with the gain at minimum. Play a familiar track at about 75% of your head unit's maximum volume. Slowly increase the amplifier's gain until you hear distortion, then back off slightly.
  • Crossover Filters (HPF/LPF/FULL):
    • HPF (High Pass Filter): Allows frequencies above the set point to pass through. Use for full-range speakers to prevent low bass distortion.
    • LPF (Low Pass Filter): Allows frequencies below the set point to pass through. Use for subwoofers.
    • FULL: Disables the crossover, allowing all frequencies to pass.
Adjust these filters to suit your speakers and desired sound. For example, set HPF for front/rear speakers around 80-100Hz, and LPF for a subwoofer around 80-120Hz.
  • Bass Boost (BASS BOOST): This control provides an increase in bass output at a specific frequency. Use sparingly to avoid distortion and speaker damage.
