5. Painting and Decaling
For best results, paint components before final assembly where possible. Refer to the color guide in the instruction booklet for recommended paint schemes.
5.1. Painting
- Clean all parts thoroughly to remove mold release agents or oils.
- Apply primer for better paint adhesion and a uniform finish.
- Use thin, even coats of plastic model paint. Allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next.
5.2. Decaling
The kit includes decals for the flag, hull numbers, deck markings, and aircraft insignia. Apply decals to a glossy surface for optimal adhesion and to prevent 'silvering'.
- Cut out the desired decal close to its edge.
- Dip the decal in lukewarm water for 10-20 seconds until it slides freely on its backing paper.
- Carefully slide the decal onto the model surface.
- Position the decal using a wet brush or cotton swab.
- Gently blot away excess water with a soft cloth or tissue.
- Apply a decal setting solution if needed to help the decal conform to surface details.
- Once dry, a clear coat can be applied to protect the decals and unify the finish.
6. Maintenance
To preserve the appearance of your Tamiya 1/700 Aircraft Carrier DDV192 Ibuki model:
- Cleaning: Dust regularly with a soft, dry brush or a can of compressed air. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
- Display: Display the model in a stable, dust-free environment away from direct sunlight, which can cause paint fading and plastic degradation.
- Storage: If storing, place the model in a protective container to prevent damage from dust or accidental impacts.
7. Troubleshooting
Here are solutions to common issues encountered during model assembly:
| Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
| Parts do not fit together | Check part numbers against the instructions. Carefully trim excess plastic (flash) from parts using a hobby knife or sandpaper. Dry-fit parts before applying cement. |
| Decals 'silver' (appear milky or have air bubbles) | Ensure the surface is glossy before applying decals. Use decal setting solution to help decals conform and eliminate air. Puncture small bubbles with a fine needle and press down. |
| Paint does not adhere well | Clean parts thoroughly before painting. Apply a thin coat of primer. Ensure paint is thinned correctly and applied in light, even coats. |
| Small parts are lost | Work in a clean, well-lit area. Use a tray or mat to contain small parts. If a part is lost, check the floor or use a magnet for metallic parts. Contact Tamiya for replacement parts if necessary. |
