5. Setup
5.1. Loading Film
- Open the camera back by pulling down the film door latch (refer to Figure 4.4).
- Insert a 35mm film cassette into the film chamber on the left side.
- Pull the film leader across to the take-up spool on the right and insert it into one of the slots.
- Advance the film slightly using the film advance lever to ensure it is securely engaged.
- Close the camera back firmly until it latches.
- Advance the film two frames, pressing the shutter release each time, until the frame counter shows '1'. This ensures unexposed film is ready.
5.2. Setting Film Speed (ASA/DIN)
The Agfa Selecta Prontor Matic P features an automatic exposure system that requires the correct film speed to be set. Locate the ASA/DIN dial on the top plate (refer to Figure 4.3) and rotate it to match the ISO (ASA) speed of your loaded film (e.g., 100, 200, 400).
6. Operating the Camera
6.1. Focusing
The camera uses a rangefinder focusing system. Look through the viewfinder. You will see a split image or a superimposed image in the center. Rotate the focusing ring on the lens (refer to Figure 4.2) until the two images merge into one, or the split image aligns perfectly. This indicates that the subject is in sharp focus.
6.2. Exposure Settings
The Prontor Matic P features automatic exposure. Set the lens ring to "AUTO" (refer to Figure 4.3). The camera's built-in light meter will automatically select the appropriate aperture and shutter speed based on the ambient light and the set film speed. For specific creative control, some models may allow manual selection of aperture or shutter speed; consult your camera's specific lens markings for these options.
6.3. Taking a Picture
- Advance the film using the film advance lever until it stops. The frame counter will increment.
- Look through the viewfinder and compose your shot.
- Focus on your subject using the rangefinder system.
- Gently press the shutter release button (refer to Figure 4.3) all the way down to take the photograph.
6.4. Rewinding Film
Once all frames on the film roll have been exposed:
- Locate the film rewind button (usually on the bottom plate, refer to Figure 4.2) and press it.
- Fold out the rewind crank (on the top plate, refer to Figure 4.3) and turn it clockwise until you feel the tension release, indicating the film is fully rewound into its cassette.
- Open the camera back and remove the film cassette.
7. Maintenance
7.1. Cleaning the Camera
- Use a soft, lint-free cloth to wipe the camera body.
- For the lens and viewfinder, use a specialized lens cleaning solution and a microfiber cloth. Avoid touching the lens surface with your fingers.
- Use a blower brush to remove dust from crevices and the film chamber.
- Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
7.2. Storage
When not in use, store the camera in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity. It is recommended to store the camera in a protective bag or case.
8. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Camera does not fire. | Film not advanced; shutter not cocked. | Advance the film using the film advance lever until it stops. |
| Film advance lever is stuck. | Film is at the end of the roll; film is jammed. | Check the frame counter. If at the end, rewind film. If jammed, do not force; seek professional service. |
| Images are blurry. | Incorrect focusing; camera shake. | Ensure proper rangefinder focusing. Hold the camera steady or use a tripod. |
| Exposure issues (too dark/light). | Incorrect ASA/DIN setting; light meter malfunction. | Verify the ASA/DIN setting matches the film. If issues persist, the light meter may require service. |
