Safety Information

  • Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves and eye protection, when handling fertilizers, seeds, or ice melt.
  • Ensure the spreader is on a level surface before filling or performing maintenance.
  • Keep children and pets away from the spreader during operation and storage.
  • Do not overload the hopper beyond its 80 lb capacity.
  • Clean the spreader thoroughly after each use to prevent corrosion and material buildup.
  • Store the spreader in a dry, secure location, away from extreme temperatures.

Figure 1: Lesco 101186 High Wheel Walk-Behind Fertilizer Spreader. The image displays the assembled spreader with its green hopper, stainless steel frame, large wheels, and handles. In the upper left corner, the components of the Ultra Spreader Repair Kit are shown: a black, four-lobed impeller, a roll pin, and an agitator assembly.

Key Components:

  • Hopper: 80 lb capacity for granular materials.
  • Frame: All stainless steel construction for durability.
  • Wheels: Oversized 13 x 5.00-6 tires with no-rust rims for stability and traction.
  • Agitator: Cam-operated oscillating agitator for improved product flow.
  • Gearbox: 5:1 gear ratio and enclosed design for even distribution and protection.
  • Deflector: Manual deflector to prevent material dispersion on the right side.
  • Ultra Spreader Repair Kit: Includes N2320 Ultra Plus Impeller, 060069 Roll Pin, and 092463 Agitator Repair Kit for enhanced performance and maintenance.

Setup and Assembly

Initial Spreader Assembly:

While the main spreader frame and hopper are largely pre-assembled, some components like the handles and wheels may require attachment. Refer to the diagrams provided with your product packaging for specific steps. Ensure all bolts and fasteners are securely tightened before use.

Ultra Spreader Repair Kit Installation:

The Ultra Spreader Repair Kit is designed to replace existing agitator components and upgrade the impeller. This kit includes the N2320 Ultra Plus Impeller, 060069 Roll Pin, and 092463 Agitator Repair Kit.

  1. Preparation: Ensure the spreader is empty and clean. Place it on a stable surface.
  2. Remove Old Components: Carefully remove the existing impeller, roll pin, and agitator assembly from the spreader's gearbox shaft. Note their orientation for reference.
  3. Install New Agitator: Attach the new 092463 Agitator Repair Kit components according to the original assembly.
  4. Install New Impeller: Slide the N2320 Ultra Plus Impeller onto the gearbox shaft. This impeller features small gussets on the vertical ribs to increase strength and reduce buildup.
  5. Secure with Roll Pin: Insert the 060069 Roll Pin through the designated hole to secure the impeller and agitator assembly to the shaft. Ensure it is fully seated.
  6. Test: Manually rotate the impeller to ensure it spins freely without obstruction.

Operating Instructions

1. Filling the Hopper:

  • Ensure the flow control lever is in the "OFF" or closed position to prevent material from spilling.
  • Carefully pour granular fertilizers, seeds, or ice melt into the 80 lb capacity hopper. Do not overfill.

2. Adjusting Spread Settings:

The spreader features an adjustable flow control. Consult the material manufacturer's recommendations for the appropriate spread rate. Adjust the flow control lever to the desired setting. It is recommended to perform a test spread on a small, inconspicuous area to verify the setting.

3. Operating the Spreader:

  • Begin walking at a consistent, steady pace before opening the flow control lever.
  • Maintain a consistent walking speed throughout the application area for even distribution.
  • When approaching the end of a pass or turning, close the flow control lever to stop material flow and prevent over-application.
  • Using the Manual Deflector: The included manual deflector can be engaged to prevent materials from dispersing on the right side, useful when spreading near flowerbeds, sidewalks, or other sensitive areas.

Maintenance

After Each Use:

  • Empty Hopper: Remove any remaining material from the hopper.
  • Clean Thoroughly: Rinse the hopper, agitator, and impeller with water. Ensure all granular residue is removed. Avoid spraying water directly into the gearbox.
  • Dry Components: Allow all components to dry completely to prevent corrosion.
  • Lubrication: Periodically apply a light lubricant to moving parts, such as the axle and control linkages, to ensure smooth operation.

Seasonal Maintenance:

  • Inspect Tires: Check tire pressure and for any signs of wear or damage.
  • Check Fasteners: Verify that all bolts, nuts, and screws are tight. Tighten as necessary.
  • Gearbox Inspection: While the gearbox is enclosed, periodically inspect for any leaks or unusual noises.
  • Ultra Plus Impeller: The N2320 Ultra Plus Impeller is designed to reduce wobble. However, regularly inspect it for wear, especially the gussets on the vertical ribs, and replace if significant wear is observed to maintain even spreading patterns.

Storage:

Store the spreader in a clean, dry area, protected from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Ensure it is completely dry before storing to prevent rust and mildew.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Uneven spreading patternImpeller wobble or wear; material buildup on impeller/agitator; inconsistent walking speed.Inspect and clean impeller/agitator. If impeller is worn, replace with the N2320 Ultra Plus Impeller from the repair kit. Maintain a consistent walking speed.
Material not flowingFlow control closed; material clumping; agitator not functioning.Ensure flow control is open. Break up clumps in hopper. Check agitator for obstructions or damage; replace components from the 092463 Agitator Repair Kit if necessary.
Difficulty pushing spreaderOverloaded hopper; low tire pressure; wheel obstruction.Reduce material in hopper. Check and inflate tires to recommended pressure. Clear any obstructions from wheels.
