5. Installation

Before you begin: Ensure the mains power supply to the circuit you are working on is switched off at the consumer unit/fuse box and secured against accidental re-connection. Use a suitable voltage tester to confirm the circuit is dead.

Wiring Instructions (2-Way Switching)

The CU4200 is a 2-way switch, meaning each gang can control a light from two different locations. Refer to Figure 2 and Figure 3 for terminal identification.

  1. Prepare Wires: Carefully strip the insulation from the ends of the circuit wires (Live, Neutral, Earth, and Switched Lives/Strappers) to expose approximately 10-12mm of copper conductor.
  2. Earth Connection: Connect the bare copper or green/yellow insulated Earth wire from the circuit to the Earth terminal on the back box (if applicable) and ensure continuity. The switch itself does not have an Earth terminal as it is a Class II product (double insulated), but the metal back box must be earthed.
  3. Common (COM) Connection: For each switch gang, connect the permanent live wire (usually brown or red) to the 'COM' terminal. If multiple gangs share a common live feed, a short link wire may be used between the 'COM' terminals of adjacent switches.
  4. Switched Live (L1 & L2) Connections:
    • For 2-Way Switching: Connect the two 'strapping' wires (often brown with red/yellow sleeves or grey/black) between the 'L1' and 'L2' terminals of this switch and the corresponding 'L1' and 'L2' terminals of the other 2-way switch controlling the same light.
    • The switched live wire going to the light fitting should be connected to either 'L1' or 'L2' on one of the 2-way switches (typically the one where the light feed originates).
  5. Secure Connections: Ensure all wires are fully inserted into their respective terminals and the terminal screws are tightened firmly. Tug gently on each wire to confirm it is secure.
  6. Mounting: Carefully position the switch unit into the wall box, ensuring no wires are trapped or pinched. Secure the switch to the wall box using the provided fixing screws.
  7. Faceplate: Attach the faceplate to the switch unit.
  8. Restore Power: Once installation is complete and all connections are checked, restore the mains power supply at the consumer unit/fuse box.

6. Operating Instructions

To operate the switch, simply press the top or bottom of each rocker switch to toggle the connected light circuit on or off. In a 2-way setup, the light can be switched from either the CU4200 or the other connected 2-way switch.

7. Maintenance

The Knightsbridge CU4200 switch requires minimal maintenance. To clean the surface, wipe with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, solvents, or polishes as these may damage the finish. Ensure power is off before cleaning.

8. Troubleshooting

If the switch is not functioning correctly, consider the following:

  • No Power to Light: Check the circuit breaker or fuse at the consumer unit. Ensure all wiring connections are secure and correct (refer to Section 5).
  • Intermittent Operation: Loose wiring connections are a common cause. Isolate power and re-check all terminal screws.
  • Switch Feels Loose: Ensure the fixing screws securing the switch to the wall box are tightened.

If problems persist after checking these points, consult a qualified electrician.
