3. What's in the Box
Upon opening the package, please ensure all components are present and in good condition:
- Behringer Model D Analog Synthesizer module
- Power Supply Unit
- Quick Start Guide (this manual)
If any items are missing or damaged, please contact your retailer or Behringer support immediately.
4. Setup
4.1 Initial Placement
Place the Model D on a stable, flat surface. Ensure adequate ventilation around the unit. If integrating into a Eurorack system, follow standard Eurorack mounting procedures, ensuring proper power connection and module depth compatibility.
4.2 Power Connection
- Ensure the Model D's power switch is in the OFF position.
- Connect the included power supply to the DC input jack on the rear of the Model D.
- Plug the power supply into a suitable AC outlet.
4.3 Audio Connections
Connect the MAIN OUT jack to your audio interface, mixer, or amplifier using a standard 1/4-inch TS cable. For headphone monitoring, connect headphones to the PHONES jack.
4.4 MIDI and USB Connections
The Model D supports MIDI In and MIDI Thru via standard 5-pin DIN connectors, and MIDI over USB. Connect a MIDI controller or computer to the MIDI IN port to send MIDI data to the synthesizer. Use the MIDI THRU port to pass MIDI data to other devices in a chain. The USB port allows for MIDI communication with a computer for control and firmware updates.

5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Powering On/Off
To power on the unit, flip the POWER switch to the ON position. The power indicator LED will illuminate. To power off, flip the switch to the OFF position.
5.2 Overview of Controls
The Model D features a logical layout of controls, divided into several key sections:
- Controllers: Tune, Glide, Mod Mix, Mod Source, Mod Depth. These control global parameters and modulation routing.
- Oscillator Bank: Three voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) with individual range, frequency, and waveform controls. Includes an A-440 tuning reference.
- Mixer: Controls the volume of each oscillator, external input, and noise (white/pink).
- Modifiers:
- Filter (VCF): Lowpass/Highpass Voltage Controlled Filter with Cutoff Frequency, Emphasis (Resonance), and Amount of Contour controls.
- Filter Amp Envelopes: Attack, Decay, Sustain controls for the filter envelope.
- Loudness Contour (VCA): Attack, Decay, Sustain controls for the amplifier envelope.
- Output: Main Volume and Phones Volume controls.
5.3 Basic Sound Synthesis
To create a basic sound:
- Ensure the unit is powered on and connected to an audio output.
- Set the Main Volume to a low level.
- In the Oscillator Bank, turn on at least one oscillator (e.g., OSCILLATOR-1) by setting its volume slider in the Mixer section to an audible level.
- Adjust the RANGE and FREQUENCY of the active oscillator(s) to hear different pitches.
- Experiment with the WAVEFORM switch for different tonal characteristics (triangle, sawtooth, square, narrow pulse).
- In the Modifiers section, adjust the FILTER CUTOFF FREQUENCY and EMPHASIS to shape the timbre.
- Adjust the ATTACK, DECAY, and SUSTAIN controls in both the Filter Amp Envelopes and Loudness Contour sections to control the sound's evolution over time.
- Use a connected MIDI keyboard or sequencer to trigger notes.

6. Maintenance
6.1 Cleaning
To clean the unit, use a soft, dry cloth. Do not use any liquid cleaners, abrasive cleaners, or solvents, as these may damage the finish or internal components. Avoid spraying cleaners directly onto the unit.
6.2 Storage
When not in use for extended periods, store the Model D in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If possible, keep it in its original packaging or a protective case to prevent dust accumulation and physical damage.
6.3 Firmware Updates
Behringer may release firmware updates to improve performance or add new features. Check the official Behringer website for the latest firmware and instructions on how to update your Model D via the USB connection.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No sound output. | Power off; volume too low; incorrect audio connections; no oscillator active; filter cutoff too low. | Ensure power is ON. Increase Main Volume and Phones Volume. Check audio cables. Activate at least one oscillator in the Mixer. Increase Filter Cutoff Frequency. |
| MIDI notes not triggering sound. | Incorrect MIDI connection; MIDI channel mismatch; MIDI controller issue. | Verify MIDI IN cable connection. Ensure MIDI channels match between controller and Model D. Test MIDI controller with another device. |
| Sound is distorted or noisy. | Input signal too hot; external interference; faulty cable. | Reduce input levels from external sources. Check for nearby electronic devices causing interference. Try different audio cables. |
| Knobs are loose or falling off. | Normal wear; manufacturing variation. | These are press-fit knobs. Gently press them back onto the shaft. If they continue to fall off, contact Behringer support for replacement parts. |
If the problem persists after attempting these solutions, please contact Behringer customer support.
