Silva Ranger 2.0 Compass Instruction Manual

Model: 37688

Introduction

The Silva Ranger 2.0 Compass is an advanced mirror sighting compass designed for experienced users and professionals who require high accuracy, precision, and durability in outdoor navigation. This compass features a robust design and essential tools for effective map work and terrain navigation.

Key Features:

  • Slope Card: For measuring slope and calculating extra distance.
  • DryFlex Rubber Grip: Ensures easy and secure handling.
  • Magnetic Declination Adjuster: Built-in for local magnetic declination compensation.
  • Mirror Sighting: With a sighting hole for accurate direction determination over long distances.
  • Magnifying Lens: Aids in precision map work.
  • Sapphire Jewel Bearing: Provides friction-free movement of the compass needle.
  • Scales: Base plate scales include 1:25k, 1:50k, mm, inch, 1:24k mile, and GPS scales. Lanyard scales include 1:24k, 1:25k, 1:50k, 1:62.5k.

Setup

Attaching the Lanyard:

The compass comes with a detachable safety-release scale lanyard. Attach the lanyard to the designated loop on the compass base plate. The lanyard also contains a small tool for declination adjustment.

Adjusting Magnetic Declination:

Magnetic declination is the angle between magnetic north (where your compass points) and true north. This angle varies by location and must be adjusted for accurate navigation. The Silva Ranger 2.0 features a built-in adjuster.

  1. Determine the local magnetic declination for your area. This information can be found on topographic maps or online resources.
  2. Locate the small adjustment screw on the compass capsule.
  3. Use the small screwdriver tip, often concealed within the lanyard's breakaway joint, to turn the adjustment screw.
  4. Align the declination scale with the correct angle (East or West) as per your local declination value. This compensates the compass for true north readings.

Operating Instructions

Taking a Bearing with Mirror Sighting:

The mirror sighting system allows for precise bearing acquisition to distant objects.

  1. Open the mirror lid to an angle of approximately 45 degrees.
  2. Hold the compass at eye level, looking through the sighting hole in the mirror.
  3. Align the sighting line in the mirror with your target object.
  4. Simultaneously, observe the compass capsule in the mirror to read the bearing indicated by the red north arrow.
  5. Rotate the compass housing until the red north end of the needle aligns with the red north arrow on the bottom of the capsule.
  6. The bearing to your target is now indicated at the index line on the compass housing.

Map Work and Navigation:

  • Orienting the Map: Place the compass on your map. Rotate the map and compass together until the compass needle aligns with the north lines on the map (after declination adjustment).
  • Taking a Bearing from Map: Place the compass on the map with the edge connecting your current position to your destination. Rotate the compass housing until the orienting lines are parallel to the map's north-south lines, with the north arrow pointing to map north. Read the bearing at the index line.
  • Using Scales: Utilize the various scales (1:25k, 1:50k, etc.) on the base plate and lanyard to measure distances on your map.
  • Magnifying Lens: Use the built-in magnifying lens for detailed examination of map features or small text.
  • Slope Card: The slope card can be used to estimate terrain steepness, which is crucial for route planning and avalanche risk assessment.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe the compass with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that could scratch the acrylic base plate or mirror.
  • Storage: Store the compass in a cool, dry place away from strong magnetic fields (e.g., magnets, electronic devices, car speakers) to prevent demagnetization of the needle.
  • Inspection: Periodically check the compass for any signs of damage, such as cracks in the housing or mirror, or air bubbles in the capsule. Small air bubbles are normal due to temperature changes but large or increasing bubbles may indicate a seal issue.
  • Lanyard Care: Ensure the safety-release mechanism of the lanyard is functioning correctly.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Compass needle sticks or moves sluggishly.Proximity to magnetic objects; internal friction; air bubble.Move away from metal objects or electronics. Tap the compass gently to free the needle. If a large air bubble is present and persistent, contact support.
Inaccurate readings.Incorrect declination setting; local magnetic interference; compass not held level.Verify declination setting for your location. Move away from power lines, vehicles, or other magnetic sources. Ensure the compass is held flat and level.
Luminous markings do not glow in the dark.Insufficient light exposure; aging of luminous material.Expose the compass to bright light (natural or artificial) for several minutes to "charge" the luminous markings. Note that the glow duration is limited (approx. 4 hours after activation). If the issue persists after charging, the luminous material may have degraded over time.
Mirror or base plate scratched.Abrasion during use or storage.Minor scratches typically do not affect functionality. For severe scratches impacting visibility or accuracy, consider replacement. Prevent future scratches by storing the compass in a protective pouch.
