EWON EC61330 Cosy 131 Industrial VPN Router User Manual

Model: EC61330 | Brand: HMS

1. Introduction

The EWON Cosy (COmmunication made eaSY) 131 is an industrial VPN router specifically designed for simple and secure remote maintenance of machines and installations at customer sites or external locations via the internet. It enables OEMs, machine builders, and system integrators to resolve machine issues through remote maintenance, eliminating the need for on-site presence. This significantly reduces support costs and travel time.

The device is compatible with existing firewalls, utilizing connections via the factory LAN (HTTPS port 443 or UDP 1194). No modifications to IT infrastructure or firewalls are required to establish communication, a feature highly valued by IT teams. Integrated WLAN and mobile wireless connectivity allow internet access without connecting to the company's LAN, offering free access, high bandwidth, simple deployment (no cabling), and simplified secure network management.

All traffic is secured via a fully encrypted SSL-based VPN tunnel (2048-bit key), ensuring that only authenticated users can connect to the EWON device. The 'Plug'n Route' function allows connection to any Ethernet device without configuring the gateway or stopping the machine during installation. It features a 4-port configurable Ethernet WAN/LAN switch, enabling direct remote access to devices via VPN through the EWON, often eliminating the need for an additional switch in the control device.

5. Setup

5.1 Physical Installation

The EWON EC61330 Cosy 131 is designed for DIN rail mounting within an industrial control cabinet.

  1. Securely attach the device to a standard DIN rail.
  2. Ensure adequate ventilation around the device to maintain optimal operating temperature.
  3. Connect the power supply (12 V/DC or 24 V/DC) to the designated power terminals. Observe polarity.

5.2 Network Connections

The device features multiple RJ-45 Ethernet ports for WAN and LAN connections.

  1. Connect the WAN port (typically Port 1 or designated WAN port) to your internet-facing network (e.g., factory LAN).
  2. Connect your industrial devices (PLCs, HMIs, etc.) to the LAN ports (Ports 2-4 or designated LAN ports).
  3. For wireless models, ensure the antenna is properly connected (if applicable).

5.3 Initial Configuration

The 'Plug'n Route' feature simplifies initial setup. For detailed configuration, refer to the official HMS Networks documentation or the Talk2M portal.

  • Power on the device. Observe the LED indicators for status.
  • Access the device's web interface via a connected PC on the LAN side (default IP address usually provided in quick start guide).
  • Follow the on-screen wizard to configure internet access, VPN connection to Talk2M, and local network settings.

6. Operating

6.1 Remote Access via VPN

The primary function of the Cosy 131 is to provide secure remote access to your industrial equipment.

  1. Ensure the Cosy 131 is connected to the internet and has established a VPN connection to the Talk2M cloud service. The 'T2M' LED should be green.
  2. From your remote location, use the eCatcher software (provided by HMS Networks) to connect to your Talk2M account.
  3. Select the Cosy 131 device you wish to connect to. eCatcher will establish a secure VPN tunnel, allowing you to access devices on the Cosy's LAN as if you were physically on-site.

6.2 LED Indicators

The LEDs on the front panel provide important status information:

  • PWR (Power): Indicates power status. Green for normal operation.
  • USR (User): User-configurable LED, often used for custom status.
  • KEY (Key): Indicates VPN key status or configuration mode.
  • DI2 (Digital Input 2): Status of digital input 2.
  • T2M (Talk2M): Indicates connection status to the Talk2M cloud. Green for connected.
  • LAN Ports (1-4): Indicate link activity and speed for each Ethernet port.
