1. Introduction

Thank you for choosing the Motorola Solutions Talkabout T503 H2O Two-Way Radios. These rugged, waterproof, and floating radios are designed to keep you connected during your outdoor adventures. This manual provides essential information for setting up, operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting your new radios.

2. Safety Information

Please read and understand all safety information before using your radios. Failure to do so could result in injury or damage to the product.

Battery Safety

  • Use only Motorola Solutions approved batteries and chargers.
  • Do not dispose of batteries in a fire; they may explode.
  • Do not short-circuit the battery terminals.
  • Do not attempt to open or disassemble the battery pack.
  • If the battery is damaged or leaking, do not touch it. Dispose of it properly.
  • Remove batteries if the radio will not be used for extended periods.

Water and Submersion Safety

  • Ensure the battery compartment cover and accessory port cover are securely sealed before exposing the radio to water.
  • The radio is designed to float and be waterproof when all seals are intact.
  • If the radio has been submerged, wipe it dry with a soft cloth before opening any compartments.

3. Product Overview

  • Antenna: For transmitting and receiving signals.
  • Power/Volume Knob: Turn clockwise to power on and increase volume; counter-clockwise to decrease volume and power off.
  • PTT (Push-To-Talk) Button: Press and hold to transmit; release to receive.
  • Mode Button: Cycles through various radio modes and settings.
  • Menu Button: Enters the menu for advanced settings.
  • + / - Buttons: Adjust volume, navigate menu options, change channels.
  • Monitor Button: Checks for activity on the current channel.
  • Speaker/Microphone: For audio input and output.
  • Display: Shows channel, battery level, and other indicators.

  • Battery Compartment: Houses the rechargeable battery pack.

4. Setup

4.1 Battery Installation

  1. Ensure the radio is turned off.
  2. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the radio.
  3. Lift the latch and remove the cover.
  4. Insert the NiMH battery pack according to the polarity markings inside the compartment.
  5. Replace the battery compartment cover and press firmly until it clicks securely into place. Ensure the seal is tight for waterproof performance.

4.2 Charging the Batteries

Before first use, fully charge the batteries. A full charge can take up to 8 hours.

  1. Ensure the radio is turned off.
  2. Open the rubber cover of the charging port located on the side or bottom of the radio.
  3. Connect the charging adapter to the radio's charging port.
  4. Plug the charging adapter into a standard wall outlet.
  5. The battery indicator on the display will show charging status.
  6. Once fully charged, disconnect the adapter and securely close the charging port cover to maintain waterproof integrity.

4.3 Attaching the Belt Clip

  1. Align the belt clip with the grooves on the back of the radio.
  2. Slide the belt clip downwards until it clicks into place.
  3. To remove, push the release tab on the belt clip and slide it upwards.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Turning the Radio On/Off and Adjusting Volume

  • To turn on: Rotate the Power/Volume knob clockwise until you hear a click.
  • To turn off: Rotate the Power/Volume knob counter-clockwise until you hear a click.
  • To adjust volume: Rotate the Power/Volume knob clockwise to increase volume, counter-clockwise to decrease volume.

5.2 Selecting a Channel

Your radio has 22 channels. To communicate with another radio, both radios must be on the same channel.

  1. With the radio on, press the Mode button until the channel number flashes on the display.
  2. Use the +> or -> buttons to select your desired channel (1-22).
  3. Press the PTT button or wait a few seconds to confirm the selection.

5.3 Transmitting and Receiving

  • To transmit: Press and hold the PTT button. Speak clearly into the microphone. The transmit icon will appear on the display.
  • To receive: Release the PTT button. The radio will automatically switch to receive mode.

5.4 Advanced Features

Your T503 H2O radio includes several advanced features accessible via the Menu button.

  • Call Tone: Press the Menu button until the call tone icon flashes. Use +> or -> to select a tone. Press PTT to send the tone.
  • Scan: Activates channel scan to find active channels. Press Mode until "SCAN" appears, then press +> or -> to start/stop.
  • Keypad Lock: Prevents accidental changes to settings. Press and hold the Menu button until the lock icon appears. Repeat to unlock.
  • VOX/iVOX (Voice Operated Transmission): Allows hands-free operation. When enabled, the radio transmits when it detects your voice. Adjust sensitivity in the menu.
  • Emergency Alert: (If applicable) Refer to specific instructions in the full manual for activating emergency alerts.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Cleaning Your Radio

  • Wipe the radio with a soft, damp cloth.
  • Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Ensure all covers are sealed before cleaning with water.

6.2 Storage

  • Store the radio in a cool, dry place when not in use.
  • For long-term storage, remove the batteries to prevent leakage.

6.3 Water Exposure Care

  • After exposure to water, especially saltwater, rinse the radio with fresh water and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth.
  • Do not open the battery compartment or charging port until the radio is completely dry.
