1. Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective use of your BARNETT Droptine STR Crossbow. Please read all instructions carefully before assembly, operation, or maintenance. Proper understanding and adherence to these guidelines are crucial for user safety and optimal performance of the crossbow.

2. Safety Warnings

WARNING: Crossbows are powerful weapons. Improper use can result in serious injury or death. Always follow all safety precautions.

  • Always treat the crossbow as if it were loaded.
  • Never point the crossbow at anything you do not intend to shoot.
  • Keep fingers and hands clear of the string path and rail when cocking and firing. Use finger guards and safety reminders.
  • Ensure the arrow is properly seated against the string and the nock sensor is engaged before firing.
  • Never dry fire the crossbow (firing without an arrow). The Anti Dry Fire (ADF) system helps prevent this, but it is not a substitute for proper procedure.
  • Always use appropriate targets designed for crossbows.
  • Wear eye protection when shooting.
  • Keep the safety engaged until you are ready to shoot.
  • Store the crossbow unloaded and in a secure location, out of reach of children.

3. Package Contents

Your BARNETT Droptine STR Crossbow package includes the following components:

  • BARNETT Droptine STR Crossbow (mostly assembled)
  • 4x32 Scope
  • Rope Cocking Device
  • Side Mount Quiver
  • Two 22-inch Headhunter Arrows
  • Lube Wax

4. Setup and Assembly

The Droptine STR Crossbow ships mostly assembled, requiring minimal setup.

  1. Unpacking: Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Inspect for any damage.
  2. Riser and Stock Assembly: The crossbow features an easy one-bolt assembly. Align the riser with the stock and secure it using the provided bolt. Ensure it is tightened firmly but do not overtighten.
  3. Scope Mounting: Attach the 4x32 scope to the rail using the provided rings. Position the scope for comfortable eye relief and tighten the rings securely.
  4. Quiver Installation: Mount the side-mount quiver to the designated location on the crossbow.
  5. Initial Inspection: Before first use, check all screws and bolts for tightness. Pay particular attention to the limb retention bolts, as these can sometimes loosen during shipping or initial use.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Cocking the Crossbow

Always use the included rope cocking device for safe and consistent cocking.

  1. Place the foot stirrup on the ground and hold the crossbow firmly with your foot.
  2. Attach the hooks of the rope cocking device to the string, ensuring they are evenly spaced and securely engaged.
  3. Place the center of the rope cocking device into the trigger mechanism.
  4. Stand up straight, pulling the rope handles upwards with even pressure until the string engages the trigger mechanism with an audible click.
  5. Remove the rope cocking device. The safety should automatically engage (ADF system).

5.2 Loading the Arrow

Use only 22-inch Headhunter Arrows or equivalent crossbow arrows with appropriate nocks.

  1. Ensure the crossbow is cocked and the safety is engaged.
  2. Place the arrow onto the rail, ensuring the nock is properly seated against the string. The nock sensor will detect the arrow's presence, allowing the safety to disengage when ready to fire.
  3. Ensure the fletching (vanes) are correctly oriented to clear the rail.

5.3 Firing the Crossbow

  1. With the crossbow cocked and an arrow loaded, aim at your target.
  2. When ready to shoot, disengage the safety.
  3. Place your finger on the TriggerTech frictionless release trigger and apply smooth, consistent pressure until the crossbow fires.
  4. After firing, immediately engage the safety if you do not intend to reload and fire again.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your crossbow.

  • String and Cable Waxing: Wax the crossbow strings and cables every 10 shots or before each hunting trip. This reduces friction and extends their lifespan. Use the provided lube wax or a suitable crossbow string wax.
  • Rail Lubrication: Apply a thin layer of rail lubricant to the flight track periodically to reduce friction and wear on the string and arrow.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspect the string, cables, limbs, and all fasteners for signs of wear, fraying, or looseness. Replace worn components immediately.
  • Cleaning: Keep the crossbow clean and free of dirt and debris. Use a soft cloth to wipe down surfaces.

7. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your Droptine STR Crossbow.

  • String Jumps Off Cams: This can occur if limb retention screws are loose or if the string/cables are worn.
    • Solution: Immediately stop using the crossbow. Check all limb retention screws for tightness. If they are loose, tighten them carefully. If the string or cables appear damaged or worn, they must be replaced by a qualified technician.
  • Crossbow Will Not Cock:
    • Solution: Ensure the rope cocking device is correctly positioned and you are applying even, sufficient force. Check for any obstructions in the trigger mechanism.
  • Crossbow Will Not Fire (Safety Engaged):
    • Solution: Verify that an arrow is properly seated against the string and the nock sensor is engaged. The Anti Dry Fire (ADF) system prevents firing without an arrow.
  • Inaccurate Shots:
    • Solution: Check scope mounting for tightness. Ensure arrows are consistent in weight and fletching. Wax the string and lubricate the rail. Practice proper shooting form.
