1. Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective operation and maintenance of your Honda EU2200i Companion 2200-Watt Portable Inverter Generator. Please read this manual thoroughly before operating the generator and keep it for future reference. The EU2200i Companion is designed for versatility, offering a 30A 125V locking plug and a 20A 125V single outlet, and can be paralleled with another EU2200i or existing EU2000i K1/T1 models for increased power output.
2. Safety Information
Your safety and the safety of others are very important. Always operate the generator in accordance with the instructions provided. Failure to do so can result in serious injury or death.
2.1 Carbon Monoxide Hazard
- Generator exhaust contains carbon monoxide (CO), a colorless, odorless, poisonous gas. Breathing CO can cause nausea, dizziness, fainting, or death.
- NEVER operate the generator inside any building, garage, shed, or other enclosed or partially enclosed space.
- Always operate the generator outdoors in an open area with adequate ventilation, away from windows, doors, and vents.
2.2 Fuel Safety
- Gasoline is extremely flammable and explosive. Handle fuel with extreme care.
- Store fuel in an approved container in a well-ventilated area, away from ignition sources.
- Do not refuel a hot or running engine. Allow the generator to cool before refueling.
2.3 Electrical Safety
- Never operate the generator in wet conditions. Keep the generator dry.
- Ensure all electrical connections are secure and properly grounded.
- Do not overload the generator. Refer to the output indicator and overload alarm.

- Exhaust Port: Located at the rear for engine exhaust.
4. Setup
4.1 Unpacking and Placement
- Carefully remove the generator from its packaging.
- Place the generator on a firm, level surface outdoors, ensuring adequate clearance for ventilation and exhaust.
4.2 Adding Engine Oil
The generator is shipped without engine oil. You must add the recommended oil before first use.
- Locate the oil filler cap/dipstick. The EU2200i features a bigger oil filler opening for easier access.
- Add the recommended engine oil (refer to specifications for type and quantity) until it reaches the upper level mark on the dipstick.
- Securely replace the oil filler cap/dipstick.
4.3 Adding Fuel
Use fresh, unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 86 or higher.
- Ensure the generator is on a level surface and the engine is cool.
- Unscrew the fuel tank cap.
- Carefully pour gasoline into the fuel tank, avoiding overfilling. The tank volume is 0.95 gallons.
- Securely replace the fuel tank cap.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Starting the Engine
- Turn the fuel cap vent lever to the ON position.
- Turn the engine switch to the ON position.
- If the engine is cold, move the choke lever to the CHOKE position.
- Pull the recoil starter grip lightly until resistance is felt, then pull briskly.
- Once the engine starts, gradually move the choke lever to the RUN position (if used).
5.2 Connecting Electrical Loads
The EU2200i Companion is equipped with a 30A 125V locking plug and a 20A 125V single outlet.

Figure 5.1: Connecting a power cord to the 30A 125V locking outlet.
- Plug your electrical devices into the appropriate AC outlets.
- Ensure the total wattage of connected devices does not exceed the generator's output wattage (2200 Watts).
5.3 Parallel Operation
The EU2200i Companion can be connected in parallel with another EU2200i or EU2000i K1/T1 model to double the available power.

Figure 5.2: Two Honda EU2200i generators linked for parallel operation, increasing power output.
- Use a genuine Honda parallel cable kit (sold separately) to connect the two generators via their parallel operation outlets.
- Follow the specific instructions provided with the parallel cable kit for safe connection and operation.
5.4 Eco-Throttle System
- When the Eco-Throttle switch is ON, the engine speed automatically adjusts to the electrical load, saving fuel and reducing noise.
- For maximum power output or when starting devices with high initial power demands, turn the Eco-Throttle switch OFF.
5.5 Stopping the Engine
- Disconnect all electrical loads from the generator.
- Turn the engine switch to the OFF position.
- Turn the fuel cap vent lever to the OFF position for storage.
6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and optimal performance of your generator.
6.1 Routine Checks
- Oil Alert: The indicator light will illuminate if the engine oil level is low. The engine will automatically shut off to prevent damage. Check and add oil as needed.
- Overload Alarm: The indicator light will illuminate and power output will stop if the generator is overloaded. Reduce the electrical load and reset the circuit protector.
- Output Indicator: A green light indicates normal power output.
6.2 Oil Change
Perform oil changes at recommended intervals. The EU2200i features a bigger oil filler opening, a longer spout, and a larger oil drain gutter for easier and cleaner oil changes.
- Run the engine for a few minutes to warm the oil, then stop it.
- Place a suitable container under the oil drain plug.
- Remove the oil filler cap/dipstick and the oil drain plug to drain the oil.
- Once drained, replace the oil drain plug and refill with new, recommended oil.
6.3 Air Filter Maintenance
Regularly inspect and clean the air filter to ensure proper engine performance and cooling. The increased ventilation area helps with inverter cooling.
- Remove the air cleaner cover.
- Remove the air filter element and inspect it for dirt or damage.
- Clean the element with warm, soapy water, rinse thoroughly, and allow to dry completely. Replace if damaged.
- Reinstall the air filter element and cover.
6.4 Storage
For long-term storage, prepare your generator to prevent fuel-related issues.
- The fuel shutoff valve allows the engine to run until the majority of fuel in the carburetor is consumed, helping prevent stale fuel issues.
- Drain the fuel tank and carburetor if storing for more than a month.
- Store the generator in a clean, dry, well-ventilated area.
7. Troubleshooting
If your generator experiences issues, refer to the following common troubleshooting steps.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Engine will not start | No fuel, low oil, engine switch OFF, choke incorrect | Add fuel, add oil, turn engine switch ON, adjust choke |
| No power output | Overload, circuit protector tripped, Eco-Throttle OFF (for low loads) | Reduce load, reset circuit protector, turn Eco-Throttle ON |
| Engine runs rough | Stale fuel, dirty air filter, spark plug issue | Drain/replace fuel, clean air filter, inspect/replace spark plug |
