1. Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the proper setup, operation, and maintenance of your Sterling by Music Man StingRay Ray4 Bass Guitar. 2. Setup

2.1 Unboxing and Initial Inspection

Carefully remove the bass guitar from its packaging. Inspect the instrument for any signs of damage during transit. Ensure all included components, such as the bass guitar itself, are present.

2.2 Tuning

Before playing, tune your bass guitar. Standard tuning for a 4-string bass is E-A-D-G (from thickest to thinnest string). Use an electronic tuner for accuracy.

2.3 Connecting to an Amplifier

Connect one end of a standard 1/4" instrument cable to the output jack on the bass guitar and the other end to your amplifier's input.

4. Operating Instructions

The StingRay Ray4 is equipped with a 2-band active preamp, allowing for precise control over your tone:

• Volume Knob: Controls the overall output level of the bass. Turn clockwise to increase volume, counter-clockwise to decrease.
• Treble Knob: Adjusts the high-frequency response. Turn clockwise for brighter tones, counter-clockwise for warmer, mellower tones.
• Bass Knob: Adjusts the low-frequency response. Turn clockwise for more bass presence, counter-clockwise to reduce bass.

Experiment with these controls to find your desired sound. The active electronics require a 9V battery (see Maintenance section for battery replacement).

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning

5.2 String Replacement

The truss rod adjusts the neck relief. This should only be performed by experienced individuals or a qualified technician. Incorrect adjustment can damage the neck.

5.4 9V Battery Replacement

The active preamp requires a 9V battery. When the sound becomes weak or distorted, it's time to replace the battery. The battery compartment is located on the back of the bass body. Open the compartment, replace the old battery with a new 9V alkaline battery, and close the cover securely.

6. Troubleshooting

• No Sound:
  • Check if the volume knob on the bass and amplifier is turned up.
  • Ensure the instrument cable is securely connected at both ends.
  • Replace the 9V battery if the active electronics are not functioning.
  • Test with a different cable or amplifier to isolate the issue.
• Buzzing/Humming:
  • Check for proper grounding of your amplifier and power outlets.
  • Ensure all connections are secure.
  • Move away from sources of electromagnetic interference (e.g., computer monitors, fluorescent lights).
• Poor Intonation:
  • Old or worn strings can affect intonation; consider replacing them.
  • Intonation adjustments at the bridge may be required. This is best done by a qualified technician.
