2. Safety Information
WARNING: LASER RADIATION
This product is a Class 2 laser product. Avoid direct eye exposure to the laser beam. Do not stare into the beam. Use of controls or adjustments or performance of procedures other than those specified herein may result in hazardous radiation exposure.
- Always wear appropriate eye protection when operating or near the laser.
- Ensure the laser is set up on a stable surface or tripod to prevent accidental movement.
- Keep the laser away from children and unauthorized personnel.
- Do not attempt to disassemble or modify the laser unit. Refer all servicing to qualified personnel.
3. Product Components
The Topcon RL-H5A kit typically includes the following items:
- Topcon RL-H5A Rotary Laser Unit
- Topcon LS-80L Laser Receiver
- Sensor Holder
- Soft Carry Case
- Bonus EDEN Field Book (may vary by package)

3.1. RL-H5A Laser Unit
The main laser unit emits a horizontal laser beam that rotates to create a continuous 360-degree reference plane. It features intuitive controls for power and manual slope adjustment.

3.2. LS-80L Laser Receiver
The LS-80L receiver is designed to detect the laser beam emitted by the RL-H5A. It features a large detection pad for reliable readings, even in direct sunlight. The receiver provides visual feedback via an LCD screen on both the front and back, indicating how far you are from the level plane with increments and arrows. A built-in bubble vial ensures the receiver is held straight for accurate measurements.

4. Setup
Setting up the Topcon RL-H5A is straightforward due to its electronic self-leveling capabilities.
- Mounting: Securely mount the RL-H5A laser unit onto a stable tripod. Ensure the tripod is placed on firm ground.
- Power On: Press the power button on the laser unit. The unit will automatically begin its self-leveling process. This typically takes only a few seconds.
- Auto-Releveling: If the laser unit is accidentally bumped or disturbed during operation, it will automatically re-level itself to maintain accuracy. If the disturbance is too significant for auto-releveling, the laser will indicate this by spinning slowly and the receiver will emit a distinct beep, prompting manual adjustment.
5. Operation
5.1. Basic Leveling
Once the RL-H5A is self-leveled, it emits a continuous horizontal laser plane. Use the LS-80L receiver to detect this plane and establish your desired level points across the job site. The receiver's LCD display will guide you to the exact level.
5.2. Manual Slope Setting
The RL-H5A allows for manual slope adjustment, which is particularly useful for plumbing, drainage, or grading applications.
- Establish Start Point: Place the LS-80L receiver on a story pole at your desired starting elevation.
- Move to End Point: Move the story pole and receiver to the desired ending elevation for your slope.
- Adjust Laser: Use the manual slope buttons on the laser unit (or the remote control, if included) to tilt the laser beam up or down until the LS-80L receiver indicates the correct elevation at your end point. The laser will then maintain this set slope across its entire range.
This method simplifies slope setting without requiring complex calculations or dialing in specific slope percentages on the laser unit itself.
6. Maintenance
6.1. Battery Replacement
The RL-H5A is powered by batteries, offering up to 100 hours of operation. The battery tray is designed for easy access and replacement. Ensure to use the specified battery type for optimal performance.

6.2. Cleaning and Storage
- Wipe down the unit with a clean, damp cloth after each use. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
- Store the laser and receiver in their protective carry case when not in use to prevent damage.
- Ensure the battery compartment is sealed properly to maintain the IP66 rating.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your RL-H5A, consider the following common problems and solutions:
- Laser Not Leveling / Spinning Slowly: This indicates the unit is too far out of level for automatic adjustment. Manually adjust the tripod legs to bring the unit closer to level, then allow it to self-level. The LS-80L receiver will also beep to alert you if the laser is out of whack.
- No Laser Beam: Check battery levels in both the laser unit and the receiver. Ensure the unit is powered on and not in a disturbed state.
- Inaccurate Readings: Verify that the laser unit is stable and has completed its self-leveling process. Ensure the LS-80L receiver's bubble vial indicates it is held straight.
