2. Package Contents

Verify that your package contains the following items:

  • One (1) Orbi Router (RBR20)
  • Two (2) Orbi Satellites (RBS20)
  • One (1) 2m Ethernet cable
  • Three (3) Power adapters
  • Quick Start Guide (not included in this digital manual)

3. Setup

Follow these steps to set up your NETGEAR Orbi WiFi Mesh System:

  1. Position the Orbi Router: Place the Orbi Router (the taller unit) in a central location in your home, preferably near your existing modem or internet service provider's (ISP) equipment. Ensure it is in an open area, away from large metal objects, thick walls, or other devices that might cause interference.
  2. Connect the Orbi Router:
    • Disconnect your modem from power.
    • Connect one end of the provided Ethernet cable to the yellow Internet port on your Orbi Router.
    • Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to your modem's Ethernet port.
    • Connect the Orbi Router to power using its power adapter and plug it into an electrical outlet.
    • Reconnect your modem to power. Wait for your modem to fully boot up and establish an internet connection (this may take several minutes).
  3. Power On the Orbi Router: Wait for the Orbi Router's LED ring to light up. It will cycle through white, then magenta, and finally solid blue when ready.
  4. Position the Orbi Satellites: Place the two Orbi Satellites (the smaller units) in locations that provide optimal coverage. For best results, place them roughly equidistant from the Orbi Router and each other, ensuring they are within range of the main router. Avoid placing them in basements or attics if possible.
  5. Connect the Orbi Satellites: Connect each Orbi Satellite to power using its respective power adapter and plug it into an electrical outlet.
  6. Wait for Satellite Connection: The Orbi Satellite's LED ring will pulse white while attempting to sync with the Orbi Router. Once connected, the LED ring will glow solid blue (good connection), solid magenta (fair connection), or pulse magenta (poor connection). If the connection is poor, reposition the satellite closer to the router or another satellite.
  7. Install the Orbi App: Download the NETGEAR Orbi app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store on your mobile device. The app guides you through the final setup steps, including creating your Orbi WiFi network name (SSID) and password.
  8. Universal Compatibility: The Orbi system is compatible with any internet service provider. If you have a fiber connection with an ONT connector, you can replace your operator's router with Orbi.

4. Operating the Orbi System

4.1 WiFi Coverage and Performance

The Orbi RBK23-100PES system provides up to 375 square meters of WiFi coverage, supporting up to 20 devices. The Mesh technology ensures you remain connected to a single network name as you move throughout your home, optimizing signal strength and speed.

4.2 Tri-Band Technology with Dedicated Backhaul

This system utilizes AC2200 Tri-Band WiFi. It features a dedicated third WiFi band for communication between the Orbi Router and Satellites (backhaul). This dedicated connection frees up the other two bands (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) for your devices, ensuring optimal speed and performance for streaming, gaming, and browsing without interference from the mesh communication.

4.3 Ethernet Ports

Each Orbi unit (router and satellites) includes Gigabit Ethernet ports. These ports allow you to connect wired devices such as smart TVs, gaming consoles, or desktop computers directly to the Orbi system for stable and high-speed network access. The router has one Gigabit Ethernet WAN port and three Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports. Each satellite has two Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports.

4.4 Parental Controls (Circle)

The Orbi system integrates with Circle parental controls. This feature allows you to manage internet access, set time limits for online activity on each device, view internet usage history, and filter websites to ensure a safe online environment for your family.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Firmware Updates

NETGEAR regularly releases firmware updates to improve performance, add new features, and enhance security. It is recommended to keep your Orbi system's firmware up to date. You can check for and install updates through the Orbi app or by logging into the web interface (orbilogin.com).

5.2 General Care

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Orbi system:

  • Keep the units in a well-ventilated area to prevent overheating.
  • Avoid placing them near sources of heat or direct sunlight.
  • Clean the exterior with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosols.
  • Do not block the ventilation openings.

6. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your Orbi system.

6.1 No Internet Connection

  • Check Modem: Ensure your modem is powered on and has an active internet connection.
  • Cable Connections: Verify that the Ethernet cable is securely connected from your modem to the yellow Internet port on the Orbi Router.
  • Orbi Router LED: The Orbi Router's LED ring should be solid blue. If it's magenta, it indicates no internet connection. Try restarting your modem, then the Orbi Router.

6.2 Poor WiFi Signal or Dead Zones

  • Satellite Placement: Reposition your Orbi Satellites. Ensure they are not too far from the Orbi Router or other satellites. The satellite's LED ring should be solid blue for a good connection. If it's magenta, move it closer.
  • Interference: Move Orbi units away from potential sources of interference such as cordless phones, microwave ovens, or large metal objects.

6.3 Devices Not Connecting to 2.4 GHz WiFi

Some older smart home devices (e.g., smart bulbs) only support 2.4 GHz WiFi. Orbi uses a single SSID for both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. If a device struggles to connect:

  • Temporary 5 GHz Disablement: Temporarily disable the 5 GHz band through the Orbi app or web interface during the device setup process. Re-enable it once the device is connected.
  • Proximity: Bring the device closer to an Orbi unit during setup.

6.4 Orbi App Issues

  • App Update: Ensure your Orbi app is updated to the latest version.
  • Reinstall App: If issues persist, try uninstalling and reinstalling the app.
  • Web Interface: Most settings can also be accessed via the web interface by navigating to orbilogin.com in a web browser while connected to your Orbi network.
