Jamo S 809 Floorstanding Speaker Instruction Manual

Model: S 809 (Model Number: 1064578)

1. Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient use of your Jamo S 809 Floorstanding Speaker. Please read these instructions carefully before installation and operation. Retain this manual for future reference.

The Jamo S 809 speaker is designed to deliver clear audio performance for home audio systems. It features a modern design and is engineered for integration into various listening environments.

2. Safety Information

Observe the following safety precautions to prevent damage to the speaker or personal injury:

  • Do not expose the speaker to excessive moisture or extreme temperatures.
  • Ensure proper ventilation around the speaker to prevent overheating.
  • Place the speaker on a stable, level surface to prevent tipping.
  • Do not block the front port or rear connections.
  • Disconnect power from associated audio equipment before making any connections.
  • Do not attempt to service the speaker yourself. Refer all servicing to qualified personnel.

3. Package Contents

Verify that all items are present in the package:

  • Jamo S 809 Floorstanding Speaker (1 unit)
  • Magnetic Grille
  • Speaker feet/stabilizers
  • Instruction Manual (this document)

Note: Speaker wire is not included and must be purchased separately. A wall mount kit is mentioned in product specifications, but it is intended for the optional S8A Dolby Atmos speaker module, not for the S 809 floorstanding speaker itself.

4. Setup

4.1 Unpacking

Carefully remove the speaker from its packaging. Inspect for any signs of damage during transit. Keep the packaging for future transport if needed.

4.2 Speaker Placement

The Jamo S 809 is a floorstanding speaker. Optimal placement is crucial for sound quality. Consider the following:

  • Stereo Setup: For a stereo pair, place speakers equidistant from the primary listening position and from each other.
  • Distance from Walls: The front-firing port allows for flexible placement closer to walls compared to rear-ported designs. Experiment with distance from the wall to achieve desired bass response.
  • Stability: Ensure the speaker is placed on a flat, stable surface. Attach the included feet/stabilizers for improved stability and isolation.

4.3 Connecting to an Amplifier/Receiver

The Jamo S 809 speaker connects to your amplifier or receiver using speaker wire. Follow these steps:

  1. Turn off and unplug your amplifier/receiver before making any connections.
  2. Prepare speaker wire by stripping approximately 1/2 inch (12mm) of insulation from both ends. Twist the bare wire strands tightly.
  3. Connect the positive (+) terminal (red) on the speaker to the positive (+) terminal on your amplifier/receiver.
  4. Connect the negative (-) terminal (black) on the speaker to the negative (-) terminal on your amplifier/receiver.
  5. Ensure no stray wire strands are touching between the positive and negative terminals, as this can cause a short circuit.

Dolby Atmos Integration (Optional): The S 809 features a patent-pending connection point on the top of the cabinet for seamless integration with the Jamo S8A Dolby Atmos speaker module (sold separately). Refer to the S8A manual for specific connection instructions.

5. Operating

5.1 Initial Power On

After connecting the speakers to your amplifier/receiver, plug in and power on your audio equipment. Start with the volume at a low level and gradually increase it to a comfortable listening level.

5.2 Break-in Period

Like most new speakers, the Jamo S 809 may benefit from a "break-in" period. This involves playing audio through the speakers at moderate volumes for several hours (e.g., 10-20 hours). This allows the driver surrounds to loosen up, potentially leading to improved sound performance.

5.3 Grille Attachment

The speaker comes with a magnetic grille. You can choose to use the speaker with or without the grille. The grille protects the drivers from dust and accidental damage. For a different aesthetic, the grille can be easily removed by gently pulling it away from the speaker baffle.

6. Maintenance

To maintain the appearance and performance of your Jamo S 809 speakers:

  • Cleaning the Cabinet: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the cabinet surfaces. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Cleaning the Grille: If the fabric grille becomes dusty, use a soft brush or a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment on a low setting to gently remove dust.
  • Avoid Direct Sunlight: Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause the cabinet finish to fade over time.
  • Temperature and Humidity: Store and operate the speakers in a moderate temperature and humidity environment.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Jamo S 809 speaker, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution

  • Incorrect wiring
  • Amplifier/receiver off or muted

  • Confirm audio is playing from the source device.
Distorted sound
  • Volume too high
  • Loose speaker wire connection
  • Damaged speaker driver
  • Reduce volume on amplifier/receiver.
  • Check and tighten all speaker wire connections.
