4. Setup
4.1 Physical Installation
The NPort 5110-1 is designed for easy installation. It can be wall-mounted or placed on a desktop.

Figure 4.1: Front view of the NPort 5110-1 showing the power input (12-48 VDC), reset button, 10/100M Ethernet port, and RS-232 DB9 male serial port. LED indicators for Ready, Link, and Tx/Rx are also visible.

Figure 4.2: Angled view of the NPort 5110-1, highlighting the integrated mounting brackets on both sides of the device, which facilitate secure wall or panel installation.
- Mounting: Secure the device server to a wall or panel using appropriate screws through the integrated mounting brackets. Ensure adequate ventilation around the device.
- Connect Serial Device: Connect your RS-232 serial device to the DB9 male serial port (Port 1) on the NPort 5110-1.
- Connect Ethernet Cable: Connect a standard Ethernet cable from your network switch or router to the 10/100M Ethernet port on the NPort 5110-1.
- Connect Power: Connect the provided power adapter to the 12-48 VDC power input. The device will power on automatically.
4.2 Initial Configuration
The NPort 5110-1 can be configured using the NPort Windows utility, web console, or Telnet.
- Install NPort Administrator Utility: Insert the documentation CD into your computer and install the NPort Administrator utility. This utility helps discover and configure NPort devices on your network.
- Discover Device: Launch the NPort Administrator utility. It will scan your network for NPort devices. Once discovered, the NPort 5110-1 will appear in the list.
- Assign IP Address: By default, the NPort may obtain an IP address via DHCP or have a default static IP. It is recommended to assign a static IP address for reliable network access. Use the utility to set the IP address, subnet mask, and gateway according to your network configuration.
- Configure Serial Port Settings: Configure the serial port parameters (baud rate, data bits, parity, stop bits, flow control) to match your connected serial device.
- Select Operation Mode: Choose the desired operation mode (e.g., Real COM mode, TCP Server, TCP Client, UDP). Real COM mode is commonly used for transparent serial data transmission over Ethernet.
5. Operating
5.1 Real COM Mode Operation
In Real COM mode, the NPort 5110-1 creates a virtual COM port on your computer, allowing your existing serial applications to communicate with the remote serial device as if it were directly connected to your PC's COM port.
- Install Real COM Driver: Use the NPort Administrator utility to install the Real COM driver on your Windows or Linux system.
- Map Virtual COM Port: Map the NPort's serial port to a virtual COM port number on your computer (e.g., COM3, COM4).
- Access Device: Your serial application can now open and communicate with the virtual COM port as usual. The NPort 5110-1 will transparently convert serial data to Ethernet packets and vice-versa.
5.2 Network Operation Modes
The NPort 5110-1 supports various network operation modes for different application requirements:
- TCP Server: The NPort listens for incoming TCP connections from network hosts.
- TCP Client: The NPort initiates a TCP connection to a specified network host.
- UDP: The NPort sends and receives data using UDP packets.
- Pair Connection: Two NPort devices can be configured to establish a direct serial-to-serial connection over Ethernet.
Refer to the detailed NPort User's Manual (available on the documentation CD or Moxa's website) for specific configuration steps for each operation mode.
6. Maintenance
The MOXA NPort 5110-1 is designed for reliable, low-maintenance operation. Follow these guidelines to ensure optimal performance and longevity:
- Environmental Conditions: Ensure the device operates within its specified temperature and humidity ranges. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight, excessive dust, or moisture.
- Cleaning: Periodically clean the exterior of the device with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners.
- Firmware Updates: Check the Moxa website periodically for firmware updates. Keeping the firmware up-to-date can improve performance, add new features, and resolve potential issues.
- Power Supply: Use only the power adapter supplied with the device or a compatible power source within the specified voltage range (12-48 VDC).
- Cable Connections: Regularly inspect all cable connections (serial, Ethernet, power) to ensure they are secure and free from damage.
