Walrus Audio 900-1040
Fathom Multi-Function Reverb
Instruction Manual
Model: 900-1040 | Brand: Walrus Audio
Introduction
The Walrus Audio Fathom Multi-Function Reverb is a feature-rich effects pedal designed to provide a wide range of reverb sounds, from subtle room ambiance to vast, modulated soundscapes. This manual will guide you through the setup, operation, and maintenance of your Fathom pedal, ensuring you get the most out of its capabilities.
Setup
Before connecting your Fathom pedal, ensure you have a compatible power supply and audio cables.
Power Requirements
The Fathom pedal requires a 9V DC power supply with a minimum of 100mA, center-negative polarity. An isolated power supply is recommended for optimal performance and to avoid noise. The power supply is not included with the pedal.
Connections
Connect your instrument to the INPUT jack and your amplifier or next pedal in the signal chain to the OUTPUT jack. Ensure all connections are secure.

Operating the Fathom Reverb
The Fathom pedal features several controls and functions to shape your reverb sound.
Controls Overview
- DECAY: Controls the length of the reverb trail. Turning clockwise increases the decay time.

Figure 2: Decay Knob
- DAMPEN: Controls the overall tone of the reverb's decay. Clockwise rotation darkens the reverb tail, while counter-clockwise brightens it.

Figure 3: Dampen Knob
- MIX: Controls the blend of dry and wet signals. The white line at 2 o'clock represents an equal mix of dry and reverb.

- X: This knob's function changes depending on the selected reverb algorithm. It typically controls parameters like pre-delay or filter width.

Figure 5: X Knob
- MOD (Toggle Switch): Selects the modulation intensity: Low, Medium, or High. In Sonar mode, the Low setting turns off modulation.

- PROGRAM (Rotary Switch): Selects one of the four custom reverb algorithms: Hall (H), Plate (P), Lo-fi (L), or Sonar (S).

Reverb Algorithms
- Hall: Provides a wide, open, and vast reverb with a decay that ends with a high-frequency roll-off. The X knob adjusts pre-delay.
- Plate: Offers a full-bodied reverb with a smooth decay. The X knob adjusts pre-delay.
- Lo-fi: A filtered reverb with decay ranging from warm to a thin, AM-sounding radio effect. The X knob adjusts filter width.
- Sonar: Reverb fed with both a high and low octave. The X knob allows you to blend the octaves.
Footswitch Functions
- BYPASS (Left Footswitch): Toggles the effect on and off. When the pedal is in the off position, press and hold the bypass switch to temporarily activate the effect for a moment of reverb. Releasing the switch turns the effect off.

- SUSTAIN (Right Footswitch): When the pedal is on, press and hold the sustain switch to sustain the reverb decay for a dreamy, ambient decrescendo.

Trails Mode
To enable or disable Trails Mode, unplug the pedal and then press and hold down the bypass switch for two seconds while plugging the pedal back in. In Trails Mode, the reverb tail will naturally decay even after the effect is bypassed.
Maintenance
To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Fathom pedal, follow these maintenance guidelines:
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the pedal's exterior. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents, as they may damage the finish.
- Storage: Store the pedal in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Disconnect all cables when not in use for extended periods.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Fathom pedal, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
- No Sound:
- Check all cable connections (instrument, amplifier, power).
- Ensure the power supply meets the specified requirements (9V DC, center-negative, minimum 100mA). Incorrect power can prevent operation or cause damage.
- Verify that your instrument and amplifier are working correctly.
- Humming or Noise:
- Ensure you are using an isolated power supply. Non-isolated power supplies can introduce ground loop hum.
- Check for faulty cables.
- Move the pedal away from other electronic devices that might cause interference.
- Effect Not Engaging/Disengaging:
- Press the Bypass footswitch firmly.
- If Trails Mode is active, the reverb may continue to decay after bypass.
