4. Machine Overview

5. Setup

5.1 Unpacking

  1. Carefully remove the Cricut Explore Air 2 machine and all accessories from the packaging.
  2. Remove any protective tape or packing materials from the machine.

5.2 Power Connection

  1. Connect the power adapter to the machine and then to a wall outlet.
  2. Press the power button to turn on the machine.

5.3 Software Installation (Design Space)

6. Operation

6.1 Material Selection (Smart Set Dial)

The Smart Set Dial on your machine automatically adjusts settings for common materials. Turn the dial to the desired material setting (e.g., Vinyl, Iron-On, Cardstock). For custom materials or more advanced settings, select 'Custom' on the dial and choose your material within Design Space.

6.2 Loading Materials

  1. Place your material onto the appropriate Cricut cutting mat (LightGrip for paper, StandardGrip for vinyl, StrongGrip for thicker materials). Ensure the material is smooth and adheres well to the mat.
  2. Align the mat with the guides on the machine and press the Load/Unload button. The machine will feed the mat into position.

6.3 Cutting/Writing Process

  1. In Design Space, finalize your design and click 'Make It'.
  2. Confirm your material settings and ensure the correct tool (blade or pen) is installed in the carriage.
  3. Press the flashing Go button on the machine to begin the cutting or writing process.
  4. Once complete, press the Load/Unload button to release the mat. Carefully remove your material from the mat.

6.4 Fast Mode

The Cricut Explore Air 2 features a Fast Mode, allowing for cutting and writing up to two times faster on certain materials like vinyl, iron-on, and cardstock. To activate Fast Mode, select the appropriate material on the Smart Set Dial and then enable the 'Fast Mode' option within Design Space before starting your project.

6.5 Using Different Tools

The machine's double tool holder allows for quick changes between different tools. The A clamp holds accessories like pens and scoring styluses, while the B clamp holds blades. To change a tool:

  1. Open the clamp lever (A or B).
  2. Remove the existing tool.
  3. Insert the new tool, ensuring it is seated correctly.
  4. Close the clamp lever to secure the tool.

7. Maintenance

7.1 Cleaning the Machine

  • Wipe the exterior of the machine with a soft, dry cloth.
  • Use a soft brush or compressed air to remove any dust or debris from the cutting area and rollers.
  • Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.

7.2 Blade Replacement

Blades should be replaced when cuts become dull or inconsistent. To replace the blade:

  1. Open the B clamp lever and remove the blade housing.
  2. Carefully push the plunger on the top of the housing to expose the blade.
  3. Remove the old blade and insert a new one.
  4. Reinsert the blade housing into the B clamp and close the lever.

7.3 Mat Care

  • Keep mats covered with the clear protective sheet when not in use to prevent dust and debris accumulation.
  • Clean mats gently with warm water and mild soap, then air dry.
  • Replace mats when they lose their stickiness.

8. Troubleshooting

8.1 Common Issues and Solutions

  • Machine not connecting via Bluetooth: Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on your device and the machine, and that they are within range. Try restarting both devices.
  • Cuts are not clean or complete: Check if the blade is dull and needs replacement. Verify that the correct material setting is selected on the Smart Set Dial and in Design Space. Ensure the material is properly adhered to the mat.
  • Mat not loading/unloading: Ensure the mat is aligned correctly with the guides. Check for any obstructions in the roller path.
  • Design Space not recognizing machine: Ensure the USB cable is securely connected or Bluetooth is properly paired. Restart Design Space and your machine.
