Safety Information

Always adhere to safety precautions when using the multimeter to prevent electric shock or damage to the instrument. Read all instructions before use.

  • Do not exceed the maximum input values for any range.
  • Use caution when working with voltages above 30V AC RMS, 42V peak, or 60V DC. These voltages pose a shock hazard.
  • Before measuring current, ensure the circuit is de-energized and the multimeter is connected in series.
  • Always disconnect test leads from the circuit before changing functions.
  • Inspect test leads for damaged insulation or exposed metal before each use.
  • Do not operate the multimeter if it appears damaged or if the case is open.

Product Overview

The MS8217 features a clear LCD display, a rotary function switch, and multiple input jacks for various measurements.

Key Components:

  • LCD Display: Shows measurement readings, units, and function indicators.
  • Function Switch: Rotary dial to select measurement modes (Voltage, Resistance, Current, Temperature, etc.).
  • Input Jacks:
    • COM: Common terminal for all measurements.
    • VΩHzTemp: Input for Voltage, Resistance, Frequency, and Temperature measurements.
    • mAµA: Input for milliampere and microampere current measurements.
    • A: Input for ampere current measurements.
  • Function Buttons:
    • HOLD: Freezes the current display reading.
    • RANGE: Toggles between auto-ranging and manual ranging.
    • REL: Relative measurement mode.
    • Hz%: Toggles between frequency and duty cycle measurement.

Setup

Battery Installation:

The MS8217 requires three AAA batteries for operation. Batteries are not included with the device.

  1. Ensure the multimeter is turned OFF.
  2. Locate the battery compartment on the back of the unit.
  3. Use a screwdriver to open the battery compartment cover.
  4. Insert three AAA batteries, observing the correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
  5. Replace the battery compartment cover and secure it with the screw.

Connecting Test Leads:

Always connect the black test lead to the COM jack. Connect the red test lead to the appropriate input jack based on the measurement type.

  • For Voltage, Resistance, Frequency, Capacitance, and Temperature measurements, connect the red lead to the VΩHzTemp jack.
  • For milliampere or microampere current measurements, connect the red lead to the mAµA jack.
  • For ampere current measurements, connect the red lead to the A jack.

Operating Instructions

General Operation:

  1. Turn the rotary switch to the desired measurement function.
  2. Connect the test leads to the circuit or component under test.
  3. Read the measurement value on the LCD display.
  4. Use the RANGE button to switch between auto-ranging and manual ranging if needed.
  5. Press the HOLD button to freeze the display reading. Press again to release.

Specific Measurement Modes:

DC/AC Voltage Measurement:

Turn the rotary switch to V~ (AC Voltage) or V- (DC Voltage). Connect the test leads in parallel with the circuit or component. The display will show the voltage reading.

Resistance Measurement:

Turn the rotary switch to Ω. Ensure the circuit is de-energized before measuring resistance. Connect the test leads across the component. The display will show the resistance in Ohms (Ω), kilo-ohms (kΩ), or mega-ohms (MΩ).

Current Measurement (DC/AC):

Turn the rotary switch to A~ (AC Current) or A- (DC Current). Important: Disconnect power to the circuit. Connect the multimeter in series with the circuit. Reapply power. The display will show the current reading. Be mindful of the maximum current rating for each input jack (mAµA vs. A).

Capacitance Measurement:

Turn the rotary switch to the capacitance symbol (typically a capacitor icon). Ensure the capacitor is fully discharged before connecting the test leads. Connect the leads across the capacitor. The display will show the capacitance in Farads (F), microfarads (µF), or nanofarads (nF).

Temperature Measurement:

Turn the rotary switch to Temp. Connect the temperature probe (thermocouple) to the VΩHzTemp and COM jacks, observing polarity. Place the probe tip on or near the object whose temperature is to be measured. The display will show the temperature in Celsius (°C) or Fahrenheit (°F).

Maintenance

Cleaning:

Wipe the case with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Keep the input terminals free of dirt and moisture.

Battery Replacement:

When the battery indicator appears on the display, replace the batteries as described in the "Battery Installation" section under Setup. Prompt battery replacement ensures accurate readings and proper operation.

Fuse Replacement:

If the current measurement function fails, the fuse may need replacement. Refer to the specifications for the correct fuse type and rating. Fuse replacement should only be performed by qualified personnel. Ensure the multimeter is disconnected from all circuits and turned off before opening the case.
