Model: HPL402

1. Introduction

This manual provides essential instructions for the safe and effective use of the Joerns Hoyer Classics Power Lift HPL402. The HPL402 is an electric patient lift designed to assist caregivers with transferring individuals safely between various surfaces such as beds, chairs, and the floor. It features a 400 lbs. weight capacity, an adjustable U-base for versatility, and ergonomic handle grips for ease of use. Please read this manual thoroughly before operating the device to ensure proper understanding and to prevent injury or damage.

2. Safety Information

Important Safety Precautions:

  • Always ensure the patient's weight does not exceed the lift's maximum capacity of 400 lbs.
  • Never operate the lift without proper training and understanding of this manual.
  • Always use the correct sling type and size for the patient and the transfer task. Ensure slings are properly attached and inspected for wear before each use.
  • Ensure all casters are locked when the lift is stationary and during patient transfers, unless movement is required for positioning.
  • Keep hands and clothing clear of moving parts.
  • Do not attempt to lift a patient if the lift appears damaged or is not functioning correctly.
  • Always maintain visual contact with the patient during transfers.
  • Ensure the patient is comfortable and secure in the sling before initiating a lift.
  • Avoid sudden movements or jerking the lift during operation.
  • Regularly inspect the lift for any signs of wear, damage, or loose components.
  • Refer to the "Legal Disclaimer" in the product information: Statements regarding dietary supplements have not been evaluated by the FDA and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or health condition. 3. Setup

3.1 Unpacking and Initial Inspection

  1. Carefully remove all components from the packaging.
  2. Inspect all parts for any visible damage that may have occurred during shipping. If damage is found, do not proceed with assembly or use, and contact your supplier immediately.
  3. Ensure all listed components are present.

3.2 Assembly (if required)

The HPL402 may require minimal assembly. Follow the specific assembly instructions provided in the separate assembly guide or quick start guide that accompanied your unit. Typically, this involves attaching the mast to the base and connecting the actuator.

3.3 Charging the Battery

Before first use, fully charge the lift's battery. Connect the charger to a standard electrical outlet and then to the lift's charging port. The charging indicator light will confirm charging status. A full charge typically takes several hours. Do not operate the lift while it is charging.

3.4 Pre-Operational Checks

  • Verify that all bolts and fasteners are secure.
  • Check that the casters roll freely and the brakes engage properly.
  • Test the lift and lower functions using the hand control without a patient.
  • Ensure the emergency stop button is accessible and functional.
  • Confirm the mechanical down-release lever operates correctly.

  • UP Button: Activates the actuator to raise the lift boom.
  • DOWN Button: Activates the actuator to lower the lift boom.
  • BASE OPEN/CLOSE Buttons: Controls the adjustable U-base to widen or narrow for stability and access.

4.2 Emergency Stop and Mechanical Lowering

  • Emergency Stop: Press the red emergency stop button to immediately cut power to the lift in an emergency. Twist to reset.
  • Mechanical Down-Release: In case of power failure or malfunction, locate the mechanical down-release lever on the actuator. Slowly pull the lever to manually lower the patient.

4.3 Patient Transfer Procedures

Always ensure two caregivers are present for patient transfers, especially for individuals requiring maximum assistance.

  1. Prepare the Patient: Explain the transfer process to the patient. Position the sling correctly under the patient according to the sling manufacturer's instructions.
  2. Position the Lift: Roll the lift to the patient. Adjust the U-base to allow the lift to be positioned around the bed, chair, or patient on the floor. Lock the casters.
  3. Attach the Sling: Securely attach the sling loops to the lift's spreader bar hooks. Double-check all connections.
  4. Initiate Lift: Using the hand control, slowly raise the patient a few inches off the surface. Pause to ensure the patient is secure and comfortable in the sling.
  5. Complete Lift: Continue to raise the patient to the desired height for transfer. Unlock the casters and carefully maneuver the lift to the destination.
  6. Lower Patient: Position the patient over the target surface (bed, chair). Lock the casters. Slowly lower the patient onto the surface using the hand control.
  7. Remove Sling: Once the patient is safely seated or lying down, release the sling loops from the spreader bar and remove the sling.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning

  • Clean the lift regularly with a mild detergent and water. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Ensure no liquids enter the electrical components.
  • Wipe down all surfaces, including the frame, mast, and boom.
  • Disinfect as needed following facility protocols.

5.2 Battery Care

  • Keep the battery charged. For optimal battery life, charge the battery daily or after each use.
  • Do not allow the battery to fully discharge frequently.
  • If the lift will not be used for an extended period, ensure the battery is fully charged and then recharged periodically (e.g., monthly) to maintain its condition.

5.3 Regular Inspection

Perform the following checks regularly (e.g., weekly or monthly, depending on usage):

  • Check all structural components for cracks, bends, or damage.

  • Examine the casters for wear and ensure they roll and lock properly.
