3. Setup

3.1 Battery Installation

The Klein Tools ET10 thermometer requires 2 LR44 batteries, which are included with the product. To install or replace batteries:

1. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the device.
2. Use a small screwdriver or coin to open the compartment.
3. Insert the 2 LR44 batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
4. Replace the battery compartment cover and secure it.

3.2 Initial Power On

After battery installation, press the power button (usually marked with a power symbol or 'ON/OFF') to turn on the device. The display should illuminate, indicating it is ready for use.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Power On/Off

• To turn on: Press the POWER button.
• To turn off: Press and hold the POWER button for a few seconds, or allow the device to auto-power off after 15 minutes of inactivity.

4.2 Temperature Measurement

The ET10 can measure both ambient and direct-contact temperatures.

1. For Ambient Temperature: Simply turn on the device. The display will show the current ambient temperature.
2. For Direct-Contact Temperature: Carefully extend the stainless steel probe from its protective sheath. Insert the probe into the substance or area you wish to measure. Allow a few seconds for the reading to stabilize on the display.

4.3 Unit Selection (Fahrenheit/Celsius)

To switch between Fahrenheit (°F) and Celsius (°C):

• Press the °F/°C button. The display will toggle between the two units.

4.4 Max/Min, Hold, and Average Functions

The ET10 includes advanced measurement functions:

• HOLD: Press the HOLD button to freeze the current temperature reading on the display. Press again to release and resume live readings.
• MAX/MIN/AVG: Press the MAX/MIN/AVG button repeatedly to cycle through the maximum recorded temperature, minimum recorded temperature, and average temperature since the device was powered on or the function was reset.

4.5 Backlight

The display features a backlight for improved visibility in low-light conditions. The backlight typically activates automatically when the device is turned on or a button is pressed, and may turn off after a short period of inactivity to conserve battery.

4.6 Magnetic Attachment

The thermometer has a magnet integrated into the base of its probe sheath. This allows it to be conveniently attached to metallic surfaces, such as HVAC vents, for hands-free monitoring.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning

To clean the thermometer:

• Wipe the device clean with a damp cloth.
• Do not submerge the device in water or use abrasive cleaners.
• Ensure the probe is clean before and after each use, especially when measuring different substances.

5.2 Battery Replacement

When the display indicates low battery or the device fails to power on, replace the LR44 batteries as described in Section 3.1.

5.3 Storage

When not in use, retract the probe fully into its protective sheath. Store the thermometer in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

• No Display / Device Not Turning On:
  Check battery installation. Ensure batteries are inserted with correct polarity. Replace batteries if they are depleted.
• Inaccurate Readings:
  Ensure the probe is clean and making proper contact with the substance being measured. Allow sufficient time for the reading to stabilize. Verify the correct temperature unit (°F/°C) is selected.
• Display Flickering / Intermittent Operation:
  This may indicate low battery. Replace batteries.
• Probe Not Extending/Retracting Smoothly:
  Check for any debris obstructing the probe mechanism. Do not force the probe.
