Instruction Manual

Introduction

The Kitronik :MOVE mini buggy kit for BBC micro:bit offers an engaging introduction to robotics. This 2-wheeled robot is designed for autonomous operation, remote control projects via a Bluetooth application, or controlled with a second BBC micro:bit as a controller through the micro:bit's radio functionality. Please note that the BBC micro:bit is not included in this kit.

Package Contents

Please verify that all components listed below are present in your kit.

All components of the Kitronik MOVE mini buggy kit laid out, including chassis parts, wheels, servo motors, and the main control board.

Figure 1: Overview of all components included in the Kitronik :MOVE mini buggy kit. This includes the main chassis plates (white and green), two wheels, two servo motors, and the central control board.

  • Main Chassis Plates (white and green acrylic)
  • 2 x Wheels
  • 2 x Servo Motors
  • 1 x Kitronik :MOVE mini Control Board
  • Fasteners and Spacers (various screws, nuts, and standoffs)
  • Servo Horns and Screws

Setup and Assembly

Follow these steps carefully to assemble your :MOVE mini buggy.

  1. Attach Servo Motors: Secure the two servo motors to the designated slots on the main chassis plate using the provided screws. Ensure they are oriented correctly for wheel attachment.
  2. Mount Control Board: Attach the Kitronik :MOVE mini Control Board to the chassis using the standoffs and screws. Make sure the board is firmly seated and aligned with the mounting holes.
  3. Close-up of the Kitronik MOVE mini control board, showing connection points for servos, power, and micro:bit.

Figure 2: The Kitronik :MOVE mini control board, highlighting the servo connections (SERVO 0, SERVO 1) and the micro:bit slot.

  4. Connect Servos to Control Board: Plug the servo motor cables into the corresponding servo headers on the control board (e.g., SERVO 0 and SERVO 1). Pay attention to the polarity (signal, VCC, GND).
  5. Attach Wheels: Secure the wheels to the servo motor shafts using the small screws provided with the servo horns. Ensure the wheels spin freely.
  6. Insert BBC micro:bit: Carefully insert your BBC micro:bit (not included) into the edge connector slot on the Kitronik :MOVE mini Control Board. Ensure it is fully seated.
  7. Install Batteries: Insert 3 AAA batteries (not included) into the battery compartment. Observe correct polarity.

Operating Instructions

The :MOVE mini buggy requires programming via the BBC micro:bit.

  1. Programming the micro:bit: Use the MakeCode editor (makecode.microbit.org) or Python to write your program. Kitronik provides example code and tutorials on their website (kitronik.co.uk).
  2. Download Program: Connect your micro:bit to a computer via USB and download the compiled .hex file to the micro:bit drive.
  3. Power On: Once the micro:bit is programmed and inserted, switch the power button on the :MOVE mini control board to the "ON" position.
  4. Control: The buggy will now execute the program loaded onto the micro:bit. This could involve autonomous movement, remote control via Bluetooth, or radio control from another micro:bit.

Example Use Cases:

  • Autonomous Navigation: Program the buggy to follow lines or avoid obstacles using additional sensors (sold separately).
  • Remote Control: Develop a mobile app or use another micro:bit to send commands to the buggy via Bluetooth or radio.
  • Robotics Challenges: Participate in educational robotics challenges, programming the buggy to complete specific tasks.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the chassis and components. Avoid using liquids or abrasive cleaners.
  • Battery Replacement: Replace AAA batteries when performance degrades. Always use fresh batteries of the same type.
  • Component Check: Periodically inspect all connections, especially servo cables and micro:bit seating, to ensure they are secure.
  • Storage: Store the buggy in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Buggy does not power on.Batteries are dead or incorrectly inserted. Power switch is off. Micro:bit not seated correctly.Check battery polarity and charge. Ensure power switch is ON. Re-seat the micro:bit firmly.
Wheels do not move or move erratically.Servo motors not connected correctly. Program error. Wheels are obstructed.Verify servo connections to the control board. Review your micro:bit code for errors. Check for any physical obstructions.
Buggy moves in the wrong direction.Servo calibration or programming error.Adjust servo trim in your code or physically re-orient the servo horns/wheels. Review movement commands in your program.
Bluetooth/Radio control not working.Incorrect micro:bit program. Bluetooth/Radio not enabled. Interference.Ensure your micro:bit program includes the necessary Bluetooth/Radio blocks. Check for other devices causing interference.
