Itek Taurus X21 Mechanical Backlit Keyboard User Manual

Model: Taurus X21

Introduction

The Itek TAURUS X21 is a mechanical keyboard designed for gamers and pro-gamers, featuring optical blue mechanical switches for extended durability. This peripheral incorporates the innovative CIY (Change It Yourself) technology, now in its updated 3.0 version. Users can independently replace the switch of each key, allowing for full customization and repair in case of accidental damage. The keys, made with Gemini double-injection plastic, are 'suspended,' enabling easy and immediate cleaning. The 'sandblasted' body is constructed from a highly resistant alloy, with an internal metal plate for increased stability. Additionally, it includes macro functions, multimedia controls, N-Key Rollover, anti-ghosting, polling rate adjustment, Windows key lock, and multi-color backlighting with various configurations.

Inside the package, you will find a kit consisting of pliers and a set of 4 different test switches (blue, red, brown, and black).

Operating Instructions

Basic Key Functions

The keyboard features a standard Italian QWERTY layout. All keys function as expected for typing and general computer use.

Backlighting Control

The Taurus X21 features multi-color backlighting with various configurations. To cycle through different lighting modes and effects, press the FN key in combination with the F9 key. Repeatedly pressing FN + F9 will switch between available lighting patterns and colors.

Macro Functions

The keyboard supports macro functions. Refer to the specific software or on-board instructions (if available) for programming custom macros. This allows users to record and execute complex sequences of key presses with a single button.

Multimedia Controls

Dedicated or FN-combined keys provide access to multimedia controls such as volume up/down, mute, play/pause, and track navigation. Consult the keyboard's keycap legends for specific multimedia key locations.

N-Key Rollover and Anti-Ghosting

The Taurus X21 features N-Key Rollover (NKRO) and anti-ghosting technology. This ensures that every key press is registered accurately, even when multiple keys are pressed simultaneously, which is crucial for gaming performance.

Polling Rate Adjustment

The keyboard allows for adjustment of the polling rate, which determines how frequently the keyboard reports its status to the computer. Higher polling rates can reduce input lag. Specific key combinations or software may be used to adjust this setting.

Windows Key Lock

To prevent accidental interruptions during gaming, the Windows key can be locked. This function is typically activated by pressing FN in combination with the Windows key. Repeat the combination to unlock.

Maintenance

Cleaning the Keyboard

The 'suspended' key design of the Taurus X21 facilitates easy cleaning. To clean your keyboard:

  1. Disconnect the keyboard from your computer.
  2. Use a can of compressed air to blow away dust and debris from between the keys.
  3. Wipe the keycaps and the keyboard surface with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Avoid excessive moisture.
  4. Ensure the keyboard is completely dry before reconnecting it.

CIY (Change It Yourself) Switch Replacement

The Taurus X21 features CIY 3.0 technology, allowing you to replace individual key switches. This is useful for customization or repairing a damaged switch.

  1. Disconnect the keyboard from your computer.
  2. Use the included pliers to gently pull the keycap off the switch you wish to replace.
  3. With the keycap removed, use the pliers to carefully grip the switch and pull it straight up to remove it from the PCB.
  4. Align the pins of the new switch (from your test kit or a replacement set) with the holes on the PCB.
  5. Gently push the new switch down until it clicks into place. Ensure it is seated firmly and evenly.
  6. Reattach the keycap to the new switch.
  7. Reconnect the keyboard and test the new switch.

Troubleshooting

Keyboard Not Recognized / Not Functioning

  • Check USB Connection: Ensure the USB cable is securely plugged into both the keyboard and the computer. Try a different USB port.
  • Restart Computer: A simple restart can often resolve connectivity issues.
  • Test on Another Computer: If possible, test the keyboard on a different computer to determine if the issue is with the keyboard or your system.
  • Driver Reinstallation: In Device Manager (Windows), uninstall the keyboard drivers and then restart your computer. Windows will typically reinstall them automatically.

Keys Not Responding

  • Clean Under Keycaps: Debris under a keycap can prevent a switch from registering. Follow the cleaning instructions in the Maintenance section.
  • Replace Switch: If a single key is consistently unresponsive, the switch itself might be faulty. Utilize the CIY feature to replace the switch as described in the Maintenance section.

Backlighting Issues

  • Check Lighting Mode: Ensure you are not in a mode where backlighting is off or very dim. Cycle through lighting modes using FN + F9.
  • Software Settings: If using specific software for lighting control, check its settings to ensure backlighting is enabled and configured correctly.
