Operating Instructions

The BackSwing allows for convenient access to your vehicle's rear cargo area. Follow these steps to swing your rack away:

  1. Release Lever: Locate the release lever on the BackSwing. Lift the lever to disengage the primary lock.
  2. Open Latch: Open the safety latch mechanism.
  3. Pull Spring Pin: Pull the spring pin to allow the swing arm to move freely.
  4. Swing Open: Gently swing the entire assembly (BackSwing + attached rack + gear) away from your vehicle. It will lock out at a 90-degree angle, providing ample clearance for tailgate access.
  5. Access Tailgate: With the rack swung open, you can now easily open your tailgate or rear doors to access coolers, snacks, or other items.
  6. Close and Secure: When finished, release the lever, swing the assembly back towards the vehicle until it clicks into place, and close the latch securely.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance will ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Yakima BackSwing adapter.

  • Clean Regularly: Clean the adapter periodically with mild soap and water to remove dirt, road grime, and salt. Rinse thoroughly and dry.
  • Inspect Connections: Before each use, check all bolts and connections, especially the threaded bolt securing the BackSwing to the hitch receiver and the connection to your hitch product. Ensure they are tight and secure.
  • Lubricate Moving Parts: Apply a silicone-based lubricant to the hinge points and the spring pin mechanism annually, or more frequently if used in harsh conditions, to ensure smooth operation.
  • Check for Damage: Inspect the adapter for any signs of wear, corrosion, cracks, or deformation. Do not use if any significant damage is observed.
  • Store Properly: When not in use, store the BackSwing in a dry, protected area to prevent rust and damage.
