5. Setup

The RE205 offers two primary methods for setup: using the WPS button or via the TP-Link Tether app/web browser.

5.1. Quick Setup using WPS (Recommended for most users)

  1. Plug In: Plug the RE205 into an electrical outlet near your main Wi-Fi router. Wait for the Power LED to turn solid.
  2. Press WPS on Router: Press the WPS button on your main Wi-Fi router.
  3. Press WPS on Extender: Within two minutes, press the WPS button on your RE205. The WPS LED on the extender should start flashing.
  4. Relocate Extender: Once the Signal LED on the RE205 turns solid blue (indicating a good connection), unplug the extender and move it to a location halfway between your router and the Wi-Fi dead zone. Ensure the Signal LED remains solid blue after relocation for optimal performance.

  2. Connect to Extender: On your smartphone or computer, connect to the Wi-Fi network broadcast by the extender (e.g., "TP-Link_Extender").
  3. Launch Setup:
    • Tether App: Download and open the TP-Link Tether app. Follow the in-app instructions to set up the extender.
    • Web Browser: Open a web browser and type tplinkrepeater.net or 192.168.0.254 in the address bar. Create a login password and follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. Relocate Extender: After successful setup, unplug the extender and move it to a location halfway between your router and the Wi-Fi dead zone. Ensure the Signal LED remains solid blue after relocation for optimal performance.

Note: For detailed instructions and advanced settings, refer to the full user manual available on the TP-Link support website.

6. Operating the Extender

Once set up, the RE205 operates automatically to extend your Wi-Fi network. Devices within the extended range will connect to the stronger signal provided by the RE205.

  • Dual-Band Extension: The extender broadcasts both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi networks, allowing your devices to connect to the most suitable band for their needs, optimizing speed and stability.
  • Ethernet Bridge: Use the Ethernet port to connect a wired device to your network, effectively turning the extender into a wireless adapter for that device.
  • Access Point Mode: The RE205 can also function as an Access Point (AP). In AP mode, it connects to a wired network and transforms it into a wireless network, which is useful for adding Wi-Fi capability to a wired-only network. This mode can be configured via the Tether app or web interface.

7. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your RE205, consider the following maintenance tips:

  • Placement: Place the extender in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and excessive moisture.
  • Cleaning: Gently wipe the device with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosols.
  • Firmware Updates: Periodically check the TP-Link website for firmware updates. Keeping your firmware up-to-date can improve performance, add new features, and enhance security.

8. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your RE205, try the following solutions:

  • No Power: Ensure the extender is securely plugged into a working electrical outlet. Check if the Power LED is on.
  • Weak Signal (Red Signal LED): If the Signal LED is red, the extender is too far from your main router. Relocate the RE205 closer to the router until the Signal LED turns solid blue.
  • No Internet Access:
    • Verify that your main router has internet access.
    • Ensure the extender is properly connected to your router (Signal LED is solid blue).
    • Try restarting both your router and the extender.
  • Forgotten Wi-Fi Password: If you forget the password for the extended network, you can reset the extender to factory defaults and reconfigure it.
  • Factory Reset: To perform a factory reset, use a paperclip to press and hold the Reset button (located in a small pinhole) for about 5 seconds until all LEDs briefly flash. The extender will then restart with default settings.
