Setup and Assembly
1. Battery Installation
The Makita XCU04Z requires two 18V LXT Lithium-Ion batteries for operation. Ensure both batteries are fully charged before use. To install, align the battery with the battery port on the saw and slide it in until it clicks into place. Repeat for the second battery. To remove, press the release button on the battery and slide it out.

2. Bar and Chain Installation/Adjustment

3. Filling Chain Oil Reservoir
Before operating, fill the chain oil reservoir with appropriate bar and chain oil. The saw comes dry and requires oil for lubrication of the chain and guide bar during operation. Regularly check the oil level and refill as needed.
Operating Instructions
1. Starting the Saw
To start the chain saw, first ensure the chain brake is disengaged. Then, press the built-in LED on/off switch to power on the tool. The saw features a lock-off lever that must be depressed before pulling the variable speed trigger. The LED on/off switch has an auto power-off function that automatically shuts the saw off when operation is delayed for extended battery life.

2. Chain Brake and Hand Guard
The front hand guard is engineered to actuate the chain brake when engaged. This is a critical safety feature. Always ensure the chain brake is functioning correctly before each use. The electric brake provides maximum productivity by stopping the chain quickly when the trigger is released.

3. Cutting Techniques
When limbing or bucking, always plan your cuts to avoid pinching the guide bar. Use the full length of the guide bar for efficient cutting.
