Safety Information
Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) including safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and sturdy footwear when operating the chainsaw. Ensure the work area is clear of bystanders and obstacles. Never operate the chainsaw when fatigued or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Familiarize yourself with the chain brake and emergency stop procedures.
- Read the entire instruction manual before operation.
- Keep hands and feet away from the cutting chain.
- Do not operate the chainsaw with one hand.
- Ensure proper chain tension before each use.
- Always maintain a firm grip with both hands on the chainsaw handles.
- Avoid cutting near power lines or other utilities.
- Store the chainsaw in a dry, secure location away from children.
Components Overview
Understand the key components of your chainsaw for safe and efficient use.
- Guide Bar: The metal bar that supports and guides the cutting chain.
- Cutting Chain: The chain with cutting teeth that rotates around the guide bar.
- Chain Brake: A safety mechanism that stops the chain rotation.
- Battery Compartment: Houses the two 18V LXT Lithium-Ion batteries.
- Power Switch: Turns the chainsaw on/off.
- Variable Speed Trigger: Controls the speed of the chain.
- Oil Reservoir: Holds the chain lubricant.
- Tool-less Chain Adjustment Knob: For easy chain tensioning.
- Brushless Motor: Provides high power efficiency.

Setup
- Battery Installation:
Ensure batteries are fully charged. Insert two 18V LXT Lithium-Ion batteries into their respective compartments until they click securely into place. The chainsaw requires two batteries for operation.

Figure 4: Proper insertion of 18V LXT batteries into the chainsaw.
- Guide Bar and Chain Assembly:
Refer to the detailed diagrams in the included printed manual for specific steps on attaching the guide bar and chain. Ensure the chain is correctly seated in the guide bar groove and the drive sprocket.
- Chain Tensioning:
Use the "tool-less" chain adjustment knob to set the correct chain tension. The chain should be snug against the guide bar but still allow for manual movement. A properly tensioned chain is crucial for safe and efficient cutting.

- Filling the Chain Oil Reservoir:
Unscrew the oil cap and fill the reservoir with appropriate chain lubricant. Monitor the oil level frequently during operation. Adequate lubrication is essential for chain and bar longevity.

- Cutting Techniques:
Always ensure a stable footing. Begin cutting with the chain at full speed. Avoid forcing the saw; let the chain do the work. Be aware of kickback and maintain control. For felling trees, follow proper notching and felling procedures as outlined in professional safety guidelines.
- Stopping the Chainsaw:
Release the variable speed trigger. Engage the chain brake. For extended breaks or storage, press the main power button to turn off the tool and remove the batteries.
Maintenance
- Cleaning: Regularly clean sawdust and debris from the chain, guide bar, and motor housing. Ensure ventilation openings are clear.
- Chain Sharpening: A sharp chain is essential for safe and efficient cutting. Sharpen the chain regularly or replace it when dull. Refer to the manual for proper sharpening angles and tools.
- Chain Oil: Always use high-quality chain and bar oil. Check the oil level before each use and refill as necessary.
- Battery Care: Store batteries in a cool, dry place. Do not expose them to extreme temperatures. Use only Makita-approved chargers.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Chainsaw does not start | Batteries not inserted correctly or discharged; Chain brake engaged; Power button not pressed. | Ensure batteries are fully charged and properly inserted. Disengage chain brake. Press the power button. |
| Chain does not cut efficiently | Dull chain; Incorrect chain tension; Insufficient chain oil. | Sharpen or replace chain. Adjust chain tension. Refill chain oil reservoir. |
| Chainsaw overheats | Overloading the motor; Blocked ventilation. | Reduce cutting pressure. Clear all ventilation openings. Allow tool to cool. |
| Chain comes off the bar | Loose chain tension; Worn guide bar or chain. | Adjust chain tension. Inspect and replace worn components. |
