Setup
1. Unpacking and Initial Inspection
Carefully remove the pH tester and all accessories from the packaging. Verify that all components are present and undamaged. The standard package typically includes:
- HI-98107 pHep pH Tester
- Protective cap
- Calibration buffer solutions (e.g., pH 4.01 and pH 7.01 sachets)
- Electrode cleaning solution sachet
- Storage solution sachet
- CR2032 Lithium Metal battery (pre-installed or separate)
- Instruction manual (this document)
2. Battery Installation
The HI-98107 pHep pH Tester operates on a single CR2032 Lithium Metal battery. If the battery is not pre-installed or needs replacement, follow these steps:
- Locate the battery compartment cap on the top of the tester.
- Twist the cap counter-clockwise to remove it.
- Insert the CR2032 battery with the positive (+) side facing upwards.
- Replace the battery compartment cap and twist clockwise to secure it.

3. Initial Electrode Preparation
Before first use, or after prolonged storage, the electrode requires preparation:
- Remove the protective cap from the bottom of the tester.
- Rinse the electrode tip with distilled or deionized water. Do not wipe the electrode.
- If the electrode appears dry, soak it in Hanna Instruments HI70300 storage solution for at least 30 minutes to rehydrate the glass bulb.

Operating Instructions
1. Powering On/Off
- To turn the tester ON, press the ON/OFF button.
- To turn the tester OFF, press and hold the ON/OFF button until "OFF" appears on the display.
2. pH Measurement
For accurate readings, ensure the tester has been properly calibrated.
- Turn on the tester.
- Immerse the electrode tip into the sample to be measured, ensuring the liquid level is above the reference junction.
- Stir gently and wait for the reading to stabilize. The pH value will be displayed on the LCD screen.
- After measurement, rinse the electrode thoroughly with distilled or deionized water before storing.
3. Calibration
Regular calibration is essential for maintaining the accuracy of your pH tester. It is recommended to calibrate at least once a week, or more frequently if high accuracy is required, or after measuring strong acids/bases.
- Prepare fresh buffer solutions (e.g., pH 4.01 and pH 7.01).
- Turn on the tester.
- Press and hold the CAL button until "CAL" appears on the display.
- Immerse the electrode into the pH 7.01 buffer solution. The tester will automatically recognize the buffer and calibrate. Wait for the "OK" message to appear.
- Rinse the electrode with distilled water.
- Immerse the electrode into the pH 4.01 buffer solution. The tester will automatically recognize the buffer and calibrate. Wait for the "OK" message to appear.
- The tester is now calibrated and ready for use.
Note: Always calibrate with fresh buffer solutions. Do not reuse buffer solutions as their pH value can change over time due to contamination or CO2 absorption from the air.
Maintenance
1. Electrode Cleaning
Regular cleaning of the electrode ensures optimal performance and extends its lifespan. If the electrode becomes sluggish or readings are inconsistent, clean it using a Hanna Instruments cleaning solution (e.g., HI7061).
- Rinse the electrode with distilled water.
- Soak the electrode in the cleaning solution for 15-20 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly with distilled water.
- Re-calibrate the tester before use.
2. Electrode Storage
Proper storage is critical for the pH electrode. Never store the electrode dry.
- For short-term storage (up to a few days), replace the protective cap containing a few drops of HI70300 storage solution.
- For long-term storage, ensure the protective cap is filled with HI70300 storage solution and securely placed over the electrode.
- Do not store the electrode in distilled or deionized water, as this will deplete the reference electrolyte and damage the electrode.
3. Battery Replacement
When the battery indicator on the display shows low power, replace the CR2032 Lithium Metal battery as described in the "Battery Installation" section under Setup.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Tester does not turn on. | Dead or improperly installed battery. | Check battery orientation or replace with a new CR2032 Lithium Metal battery. |
| Inaccurate or unstable readings. |
|
|
| "Err" message during calibration. | Incorrect buffer solution or electrode issue. | Ensure the correct buffer solution is used (e.g., 7.01 then 4.01). Clean and rehydrate the electrode, then attempt calibration again. If the problem persists, the electrode may need replacement. |
| Slow response time. | Dirty or dehydrated electrode. | Clean the electrode and soak it in storage solution for at least 30 minutes to rehydrate. |
