5. Setup

5.1 Placement

The placement of your subwoofer significantly impacts its performance. Consider the following:

  • Corner Placement: Often provides the most bass output due to room gain. Use the "Corner" EQ setting.
  • Wall Placement: Placing the subwoofer against a wall can also enhance bass. Use the "Wall/In-cabinet" EQ setting.
  • Free Standing: For a more balanced response, place the subwoofer away from walls and corners. Use the "Free Standing" EQ setting.
  • Experiment with different positions to find the best sound for your room.

5.2 Connections

Before making any connections, ensure the subwoofer and your audio receiver/amplifier are turned off and unplugged from the power outlet.

  1. LFE (Low-Frequency Effects) Connection:

For receivers with a dedicated subwoofer output (LFE or Sub Out), connect a single RCA cable from the receiver's LFE output to the LFE input on the Kube10b. This is the recommended connection for home theater systems.

  2. Stereo (Line Level) Connection:

If your receiver does not have an LFE output, connect RCA cables from your receiver's stereo pre-out (left and right) to the corresponding left and right line-level inputs on the Kube10b. The KEF Smart Connect feature will automatically detect this input type.

  3. Power Connection:

Once all audio connections are made, connect the supplied power cord to the subwoofer's power inlet and then to a suitable wall outlet.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1 Initial Power On

After connecting the subwoofer, turn on your audio receiver/amplifier first, then switch on the Kube10b. The power indicator light will illuminate.

6.2 Control Adjustments

The Kube10b features several controls on its rear panel to fine-tune its performance to your listening environment and preferences:

  • Gain (Volume): Adjusts the overall output level of the subwoofer. Start with a low setting and gradually increase until the bass blends seamlessly with your main speakers.
  • Phase: Allows you to adjust the phase of the subwoofer's output relative to your main speakers. This helps ensure that the bass waves from the subwoofer and main speakers arrive at your listening position in sync, preventing cancellation or reinforcement issues. Experiment with 0° and 180° settings to find the one that provides the most impactful and coherent bass.
  • Low Pass Filter (LPF): Sets the upper frequency limit for the subwoofer. Frequencies above this setting will be rolled off. This control should be set based on the low-frequency capabilities of your main speakers. A common starting point is around 80Hz-100Hz. If your receiver has a built-in crossover, set the LPF on the subwoofer to its maximum or bypass setting.
  • Crossovers: Refers to the frequency point where the audio signal is divided between the subwoofer and the main speakers. This is often controlled by the Low Pass Filter knob.

6.3 Custom EQ Settings

The Kube10b includes three pre-programmed custom EQ settings to optimize performance based on its placement:

  • Free Standing: For subwoofers placed away from walls and corners.
  • Corner: For subwoofers placed in a room corner.
  • Wall/In-cabinet: For subwoofers placed against a wall or inside a cabinet.

Select the appropriate EQ setting using the switch on the rear panel to match your subwoofer's physical location for the best acoustic performance.

6.4 KEF Smart Connect

The KEF Smart Connect feature automatically detects whether you are using an LFE (single RCA) or stereo (left and right RCA) input. It then adjusts the subwoofer's internal processing and volume level accordingly, simplifying setup and ensuring optimal performance regardless of your connection type.

7. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to clean the cabinet. Do not use liquid cleaners, aerosol cleaners, or harsh chemicals, as they may damage the finish.
  • Dust: Regularly dust the subwoofer to prevent accumulation, especially around the driver and ventilation areas.
  • Grille: The grille can be carefully removed for cleaning, but ensure it is reattached securely to protect the driver.
  • Avoid Direct Sunlight and Heat: Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or excessive heat can damage the cabinet and internal components.
