2. Package Contents

Before you begin, please verify that your package contains the following items:

  • TL-SG1005P 5-Port Gigabit PoE Switch
  • Power Adapter
  • Installation Guide

3. Setup and Installation

The TL-SG1005P switch is designed for simple plug-and-play installation. No software configuration is required.

3.1 Connecting the Switch

  1. Connect to Power: Plug the provided power adapter into the switch's power port and then into a standard electrical outlet. The Power LED on the switch should illuminate.
  2. Connect Devices: Connect your network devices (e.g., router, computer, IP camera, IP phone, access point) to the RJ45 ports on the switch using Ethernet cables. Ports 1-4 support PoE+ for compatible devices, while Port 5 is a standard Gigabit Ethernet port.

3.2 LED Indicators

The switch features LED indicators to provide status information:

  • Power LED: Green indicates the device is powered on.
  • Left LED (Ports 1-5): Green indicates a 1000Mbps link. Yellow indicates a 10/100Mbps link. Blinking indicates activity.
  • Right LED (PoE Ports 1-4): Solid Green indicates PoE powered. Flashing Green indicates a PoE fault.
  • PoE Max LED: Indicates the total PoE power budget usage.

4. Operating Features

The TL-SG1005P offers several features to enhance network performance and reliability.

4.1 Power over Ethernet (PoE+)

Ports 1-4 are PoE+ (802.3at/af) compliant, providing up to 30W of power per port with a total PoE power budget of 65W. This allows you to power compatible devices directly through the Ethernet cable, simplifying deployment and reducing cable clutter.

PoE+ capabilities allow for flexible deployment of network devices.

4.2 PoE Auto Recovery

The switch supports PoE Auto Recovery on ports 1-4. If a PoE-powered device (PD) becomes unresponsive, the switch can automatically detect this and restart the PD by cutting and restoring power to the port. This feature helps to reduce manual intervention and maintain network uptime.

PoE Auto Recovery automatically reboots unresponsive PoE devices.

4.3 Extend Mode

The TL-SG1005P includes an Extend Mode switch (located on the rear of the device) for ports 1-2. When enabled, Extend Mode allows for PoE data transmission up to 820 feet (250 meters) at 10 Mbps, which is useful for long-distance deployments of devices like IP cameras. When Extend Mode is off, the default transmission distance is 328 feet (100 meters) at 10/100/1000 Mbps.

Extend Mode allows for longer cable runs for specific applications.

4.4 Quality of Service (QoS)

The switch supports Port-based 802.1p/DSCP QoS, which allows you to prioritize network traffic. This ensures that critical data, such as video or voice, receives preferential treatment, preventing bottlenecks and ensuring smooth performance even during high network utilization.

4.5 IGMP Snooping

IGMP Snooping optimizes multicast traffic delivery, such as IPTV streaming. By intelligently forwarding multicast streams only to the ports that have requested them, it prevents unnecessary traffic from flooding the network, improving efficiency and performance.

5. Maintenance

The TL-SG1005P is designed for reliable, maintenance-free operation. However, consider the following for optimal performance:

  • Placement: Ensure the switch is placed in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and excessive moisture.
  • Cleaning: Keep the device clean and free of dust. Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners.
  • Cable Management: Ensure Ethernet cables are properly routed and not excessively bent or strained.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your TL-SG1005P switch, refer to the following common troubleshooting tips:

  • No Power: Ensure the power adapter is securely connected to both the switch and a working electrical outlet. Check the Power LED. If it's off, try a different outlet or power adapter if available.
  • No Link/Activity: Verify that the Ethernet cables are securely connected to both the switch and the connected device. Check the corresponding port LED on the switch. If it's off, try a different cable or port. Ensure the connected device is powered on and functioning correctly.
  • PoE Device Not Powering On: Ensure the device is PoE (802.3af/at) compatible. Check the PoE LED for the specific port; a flashing green LED indicates a PoE fault. Ensure the total PoE power budget (65W) is not exceeded by all connected PoE devices. Try enabling PoE Auto Recovery if the device is unresponsive.
  • Slow Network Speed: Verify that all connected devices and cables support Gigabit Ethernet for optimal speed. Check for excessive network traffic or potential loops. If Extend Mode is enabled, remember that it limits speed to 10 Mbps on ports 1-2.
