Setup and Installation

This custom wiring harness is designed for easy installation without requiring extensive modifications to your vehicle's wiring. Follow these general steps for installation. Refer to your vehicle's service manual for specific access points to taillight assemblies.

  1. Preparation: Ensure your vehicle's engine is off and the parking brake is engaged. Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts during installation.
  2. Access Vehicle Wiring: Locate and access the vehicle's taillight wiring harness connectors. This typically involves removing taillight assemblies or accessing wiring behind interior trim panels in the trunk or cargo area.
  3. Connect T-Connectors: Plug the vehicle-specific T-connectors of the CURT harness directly into the corresponding factory wiring connectors. These are designed for a precise fit, eliminating the need for cutting or splicing.

  4. Mount Control Module: Secure the control module in a dry, protected location within the vehicle, away from moving parts and excessive heat. Use the provided zip ties or double-sided tape if applicable.
  5. Connect Power Wire: Route the power wire from the control module to the vehicle's battery. Install the included fuse holder and fuse as close to the battery as possible. Connect the power wire to the positive battery terminal. Ensure the wire is properly secured and protected from abrasion.
  6. Route 4-Way Flat Connector: Route the 4-way flat connector to the exterior of the vehicle, typically near the trailer hitch. Ensure it is accessible for connecting to a trailer.

Troubleshooting

The CURT wiring harness features a circuit protected converter system designed to prevent damage from short circuits or overloads. If you experience issues, consider the following:

ProblemPossible Cause / Solution
No trailer lights or intermittent lights
  • Check vehicle fuse.
  • Check trailer bulbs.
  • Check for loose or corroded connections.
  • Check ground wire on both the harness and trailer.
  • Locate and correct a short.
If a light flashes rapidly then goes off
  • Check ground wire on both the harness and trailer.
  • Check for correct or overloaded condition (too many bulbs).
If vehicle lamps are working but trailer lamps are not working
  • A short circuit or overload situation has occurred. The circuit protection will shut power off to the faulted circuit for a few seconds then try the circuit again.
  • If power lamps return to normal function, no further action is needed.

Note: Using a tester can help confirm system function. For persistent problems, see your installer for corrective action. Avoid overloading the circuit by using proper trailer lighting and frequently verify wiring.
