Introduction
This manual provides detailed instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of the SJE Rhombus Float Switch, Model 15PMWPSWE. This wide-angle, SPDT (Single Pole Double Throw) float switch is designed for automatic control of liquid levels, particularly suitable for potable water applications. Please read this manual thoroughly before installation and operation to ensure safe and efficient use.
Safety Information
- Always disconnect power before installing or servicing the float switch.
- Installation should be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with all local and national electrical codes.
- Do not exceed the maximum electrical ratings of the switch.
- Ensure the float switch is used only with compatible liquids as specified (potable water).
- Protect the cable from sharp objects, excessive heat, and chemical exposure.
Product Overview
The SJE Rhombus Float Switch (Model 15PMWPSWE) is an automatic liquid level control device. It features a wide-angle operation and a SPDT switch configuration, allowing it to be used for both normally open (NO) and normally closed (NC) applications. The float is constructed from durable PVC material, making it suitable for potable water environments.

Setup and Installation
1. Mounting the Float Switch
The float switch is typically mounted using the included cable weight. The cable weight allows for adjustment of the pumping range (the difference between the ON and OFF points).
- Determine the desired ON and OFF liquid levels.
- Attach the cable weight to the float switch cable at the appropriate distance from the float body. The distance between the float and the cable weight determines the pumping range.
- Suspend the float switch in the tank or basin so that it can freely move up and down with the liquid level without obstruction. Ensure the cable is not kinked or stressed.
2. Electrical Connection
The float switch has a SPDT (Single Pole Double Throw) configuration, meaning it has three wires: Common, Normally Open (NO), and Normally Closed (NC). Refer to the wiring diagram below for typical connections.
- Common Wire: Connects to the power source or control circuit.
- Normally Open (NO) Wire: Completes the circuit when the float is in the "up" position (liquid level is high). Use for pump-down applications (emptying a tank).
- Normally Closed (NC) Wire: Completes the circuit when the float is in the "down" position (liquid level is low). Use for pump-up applications (filling a tank).
Important: Always consult a qualified electrician for wiring to ensure compliance with local electrical codes and safety standards. The switch is rated for 120 to 230VAC, 13 Amps.
Operating Instructions
Once properly installed and wired, the SJE Rhombus Float Switch operates automatically based on the liquid level. The wide-angle design allows for a significant tilt before activation, providing reliable switching.
- Pump-Up Operation (Filling): Connect the Common and Normally Closed (NC) wires. When the liquid level drops, the float switch will tilt down, closing the NC contact and activating the pump to fill the tank. When the level rises, the float tilts up, opening the NC contact and deactivating the pump.
- Pump-Down Operation (Emptying): Connect the Common and Normally Open (NO) wires. When the liquid level rises, the float switch will tilt up, closing the NO contact and activating the pump to empty the tank. When the level drops, the float tilts down, opening the NO contact and deactivating the pump.
The switch activates at approximately 45 degrees above horizontal for "ON" and 45 degrees below horizontal for "OFF", providing a robust switching differential.
Maintenance
The SJE Rhombus Float Switch is designed for minimal maintenance. However, periodic inspection is recommended to ensure optimal performance.
- Visual Inspection: Regularly check the float body and cable for any signs of damage, wear, or accumulation of debris.
- Cable Condition: Ensure the cable is free from kinks, abrasions, or cuts.
- Float Movement: Verify that the float can move freely without obstruction within the tank or basin.
- Cleaning: If necessary, clean the float body with water and a mild detergent. Do not use harsh chemicals that could damage the PVC material.
- Electrical Connections: Periodically check electrical connections for tightness and corrosion. (Ensure power is disconnected before inspection).
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Switch does not activate. | Incorrect wiring; Float obstructed; Power issue; Damaged switch. | Verify wiring against diagram; Clear obstructions around float; Check power supply; Inspect switch for damage, replace if necessary. |
| Switch activates at wrong level. | Incorrect cable weight position; Float obstructed. | Adjust cable weight to set desired ON/OFF points; Clear obstructions. |
| Intermittent operation. | Loose electrical connections; Debris interfering with float; Damaged cable. | Check and tighten all electrical connections; Clean float and tank; Inspect cable for damage, replace if damaged. |
If troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue, contact SJE Rhombus customer support or a qualified technician.
