Setup Instructions

  1. Connect Antennas: Securely attach one antenna to the SMA port of the Air Module and the other antenna to the SMA port of the Ground Module. Ensure they are finger-tight.
  2. Air Module Connection: Connect the Air Module to your flight controller (e.g., APM 2.6, APM 2.8, PX4, Pixhawk 2.4.7, Pixhawk 2.4.8) using the provided lead set. Refer to your flight controller's documentation for the correct telemetry port pinout.
  3. Ground Module Connection:
    • For Computer: Plug the Ground Module directly into an available USB port on your computer.
    • For Android Device: Use the provided OTG cable to connect the Ground Module to your Android smartphone or tablet.
  4. Driver Installation (if necessary): For computer connections, your operating system may automatically install necessary drivers. If not, you may need to manually install drivers for the USB serial port.
  5. Baud Rate Configuration: The telemetry kit is typically pre-configured to a baud rate of 57600. When setting up your ground station software (e.g., Mission Planner), ensure this baud rate is selected. Note: Some documentation or older kits might suggest 115200, but 57600 is the common default for this specific kit.
  6. COM Port Selection: In your ground station software, select the correct COM port corresponding to the connected Ground Module. Do not select "AUTO" as this can lead to connection issues.

Operating Instructions

Once the hardware is connected and configured, you can begin operating your telemetry system.

  1. Power On: Ensure your flight controller and the connected Air Module are powered on. The Ground Module will receive power via its USB connection.
  2. Launch Ground Station Software: Open your preferred ground station software (e.g., Mission Planner, QGroundControl) on your computer or Android device.
  3. Establish Connection:
    • Select the correct COM port for the Ground Module.
    • Set the baud rate to 57600.
    • Click the "Connect" button within the software.
  4. Monitor Data: Upon successful connection, you should see real-time flight data, GPS information, battery status, and other telemetry data displayed in your ground station software.
  5. Firmware Upgrades: The SiK firmware includes a bootloader, allowing for radio firmware upgrades over the serial interface. Consult the SiK firmware documentation for detailed upgrade procedures.

Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your telemetry kit, follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Handle with Care: Avoid dropping the modules or subjecting them to excessive force.
  • Keep Dry: Protect the modules from moisture and extreme temperatures.
  • Clean Connections: Periodically inspect and gently clean the SMA ports and pin headers to ensure good contact.
  • Antenna Care: Ensure antennas are not bent or damaged. A damaged antenna can significantly reduce range and performance.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your telemetry kit, refer to the following troubleshooting steps:

  • No Connection:
    • Verify that both modules are powered on.
    • Ensure antennas are securely attached.
    • Check that the correct COM port is selected in your ground station software. Avoid "AUTO" selection.
    • Confirm the baud rate is set to 57600.
    • Inspect all cable connections for looseness or damage.
    • Try a different USB port on your computer.
  • Interference with GPS/Compass:
    • Some users have reported potential interference with GPS or compass modules, especially with 500mW devices.
    • Try increasing the physical distance between the telemetry air module and your flight controller's GPS/compass unit.
    • Ensure proper shielding of components if possible.
  • Incompatible Flight Controller:
    • While compatible with APM and Pixhawk series, this kit may not be compatible with all flight controllers (e.g., Holybro 6C has been reported as incompatible).
    • Verify pinout compatibility if using a non-standard flight controller.
  • Incorrect Baud Rate:
    • The default baud rate is 57600. If you are unable to connect, double-check this setting in your ground station software. Some older documentation might incorrectly suggest 115200.
