2. Setup
2.1 Unpacking
Upon opening the package, ensure the following items are present:
- Sharp EL-506TSBBW Scientific Calculator
- Protective Hard Case
- Instruction Manual (this document)
- 1 LR44 Battery (pre-installed)
2.2 Power Source
The EL-506TSBBW calculator utilizes a hybrid power system, combining solar power with a pre-installed LR44 battery.
- Solar Power: The calculator will primarily use solar power when sufficient light is available. Ensure the solar panel, located above the display, is exposed to light during use.
- Battery Power: The LR44 battery provides power in low-light conditions or when solar power is insufficient. The battery is pre-installed and typically does not require immediate replacement.
To turn the calculator ON, press the ON/C key. To turn the calculator OFF, press 2nd F followed by OFF/C. The calculator will also automatically power off after a period of inactivity to conserve battery life.
3. Operating Instructions
The Sharp EL-506TSBBW features a 12-digit, 2-line LCD display and 470 functions across 6 modes.
3.1 Display and Basic Input
The 2-line display shows the calculation entry on the upper line and the result on the lower line simultaneously. The Direct Algebraic Logic (D.A.L.) system allows for inputting equations exactly as they are written.
- Entering Numbers: Use the numeric keys (0-9) and the decimal point key (.).
- Basic Operations: Use +, -, ×, ÷ for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
- Equals: Press = to execute the calculation.
- Clear Entry/All Clear: Press ON/C once to clear the current entry. Press it twice to clear all calculations and settings.
- Home Key: The HOME key allows users to return to the initial calculation screen, clearing any previously entered data or settings.

3.2 Function Keys and Second Function (2nd F)
Many keys have a secondary function, indicated by text printed above the key, often in a different color (e.g., orange or yellow). To access these functions, press the 2nd F key first, then the desired function key.
Common functions include:
- Trigonometric Functions: sin, cos, tan and their inverse functions (2nd F then sin-1, etc.).
- Logarithmic Functions: log (base 10) and ln (natural logarithm).
- Powers and Roots: x2, √, xy, y√x.
- Factorials: n!
- Constants: π (Pi).
3.3 Operating Modes
The calculator features 6 operating modes. To change modes, press the MODE key and select the desired mode using the numeric keys.
- NORMAL Mode: Standard arithmetic and scientific calculations.
- STAT Mode: For statistical calculations (1, 2, and 3 variable statistics, 6 regression types).
- EQUATION Mode: Solves quadratic and cubic equations.
- COMPLEX Mode: For complex number calculations.
- MATRIX Mode: Performs matrix calculations.
- LIST Mode: For list-based calculations.
3.4 Memory Functions
The EL-506TSBBW includes various memory types to store and recall values.
- Independent Memory (M+): Adds the displayed value to memory. M- subtracts. RCL M recalls.
- Temporary Memories: Eight temporary memories are available for short-term storage.
- Formula Memories: Four formula memories allow storage of frequently used formulas.
- Last Answer Memory (ANS): Stores the result of the previous calculation. Press ANS to recall.
3.5 Advanced Functions
The calculator supports a wide range of advanced mathematical and scientific functions:
- N-BASE Calculations: Perform calculations in Hexadecimal (HEX), Binary (BIN), Decimal (DEC), Octal (OCT), and Pentadecimal (PEN) bases.
- Differential and Integral Functions: Numerical differentiation and integration.
- Equation Editing & Playback: Review and edit previous equations.
- Normal Probability: Calculations related to normal distribution.
- Hyperbolic Trigonometric Functions: sinh, cosh, tanh.

4. Maintenance
4.1 Cleaning
To maintain the calculator's appearance and functionality:
- Wipe the calculator's surface with a soft, dry cloth.
- For stubborn dirt, slightly dampen the cloth with water. Do not use harsh chemicals, solvents, or abrasive cleaners.
- Avoid getting moisture into the calculator's openings.
4.2 Battery Replacement
The calculator uses one LR44 button cell battery. When the display becomes dim or erratic in low light, it may be time to replace the battery.
- Ensure the calculator is turned OFF.
- Locate the battery compartment on the back of the calculator.
- Carefully open the compartment using a small screwdriver if necessary.
- Remove the old LR44 battery and insert a new one, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
- Close the battery compartment securely.
- Press the ON/C key to turn on the calculator and verify functionality.
Note: Dispose of used batteries according to local regulations.
4.3 Storage
When not in use, store the calculator in its protective hard case to prevent damage to the display and keys. Avoid exposing the calculator to extreme temperatures, humidity, or direct sunlight for extended periods.
5. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Calculator does not turn on. | Insufficient light for solar panel, or dead battery. | Ensure adequate light exposure. Replace the LR44 battery if necessary. |
| Display is dim or flickering. | Low battery power. | Replace the LR44 battery. Ensure sufficient light for solar operation. |
| Incorrect calculation results. | Incorrect mode selected, or syntax error in input. | Verify the calculator is in the correct operating mode (e.g., NORMAL, STAT). Review your input for correct syntax and order of operations. Use the HOME key to clear and restart. |
| "ERROR" message displayed. | Mathematical error (e.g., division by zero, invalid input for a function). | Check the entered equation for mathematical impossibilities or incorrect function arguments. Press ON/C to clear the error. |
| Keys are unresponsive. | Temporary software glitch or physical obstruction. | Try turning the calculator off and on again. If the issue persists, remove and reinsert the battery. Ensure no debris is lodged under the keys. |
