Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your Makita XCU03PT1 18V X2 (36V) LXT Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless 14-inch Chainsaw Kit. Please read and understand all instructions before using the product. Keep this manual for future reference.
Safety Information
Operating a chainsaw can be hazardous. Always prioritize safety to prevent serious injury. Adhere to the following general safety guidelines:
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE): This includes safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, sturdy footwear, and leg protection.
- Understand your chainsaw: Familiarize yourself with all controls, safety features, and how to stop the saw quickly.
- Inspect before use: Ensure the chain is sharp and properly tensioned, the bar is lubricated, and all components are securely fastened.
- Maintain a clear work area: Remove obstacles and ensure stable footing. Keep bystanders, children, and pets at a safe distance.
- Proper grip: Always hold the chainsaw firmly with both hands, with your thumbs and fingers encircling the handles.
- Be aware of kickback: Avoid cutting with the tip of the guide bar. Maintain a firm grip and proper stance.
- Battery safety: Use only specified Makita batteries and chargers. Do not expose batteries to water, heat, or direct sunlight.
- Environmental conditions: Do not operate in wet conditions or in the presence of flammable liquids or gases.

Setup
1. Battery Installation and Charging
- Charge Batteries: Insert the 18V LXT Lithium-Ion 5.0Ah batteries into the 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Dual Port Rapid Optimum Charger. Ensure the charger is plugged into a suitable power outlet. The charger will indicate when batteries are fully charged (approximately 45 minutes for 5.0Ah batteries).
- Install Batteries: Slide two charged batteries into the battery slots on the chainsaw until they click into place. The chainsaw requires two 18V batteries for 36V operation.

2. Bar and Chain Installation/Adjustment
The chainsaw features a 'tool-less' chain adjustment system for convenience.
- Refer to the chainsaw's side cover for instructions on how to loosen the tensioning knob and remove the cover.
- Carefully place the chain around the sprocket and guide bar, ensuring the cutting edges face the correct direction.
- Reattach the side cover and tighten the tensioning knob until the chain is snug but can still be pulled freely around the bar by hand. The chain should not sag from the bottom of the guide bar.
3. Oil Filling
The chainsaw requires bar and chain oil for proper lubrication during operation.
- Locate the large oil filling port on the chainsaw.
- Unscrew the cap and fill the reservoir with high-quality bar and chain oil. The view window allows you to easily monitor the oil level.
- Securely replace the cap.
Operating Instructions
1. Starting the Chainsaw
- Ensure batteries are installed and the oil reservoir is filled.
- Press and hold the main power button (LED on/off switch) until the indicator light turns green. This activates the chainsaw.
- Engage the front hand guard (chain brake) by pulling it back towards the front handle.
- Depress the lock-off lever (safety switch) with your thumb, then squeeze the variable speed trigger to start the chain.
2. Cutting Techniques
Always use proper cutting techniques to ensure safety and efficiency.
- Maintain balance: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and maintain a firm grip on both handles.
- Avoid kickback zones: Do not cut with the upper quadrant of the guide bar tip.
- Let the saw do the work: Apply light pressure and allow the chain to cut through the wood. Forcing the saw can lead to kickback or damage.
- Cutting small branches: Use the bottom of the guide bar for smaller cuts.
- Cutting larger logs: Make a relief cut on the underside of the log first to prevent pinching, then complete the cut from the top.

3. Battery Indicators
The chainsaw features built-in battery indicators to show the remaining charge for each 18V battery. Press the small button next to the battery slots to illuminate the LED indicators. This allows you to monitor battery status and plan for recharging.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your chainsaw.
1. Chain Adjustment
Periodically check chain tension. A properly tensioned chain should be snug against the guide bar but still allow you to pull it freely by hand. Adjust using the 'tool-less' tensioning knob as described in the Setup section.
2. Bar and Chain Lubrication
Ensure the oil reservoir is always filled with bar and chain oil before and during operation. The chainsaw automatically lubricates the chain, but consistent oil supply is critical to prevent wear and overheating.
3. Cleaning
- After each use: Remove batteries. Use a brush or compressed air to clean sawdust, chips, and debris from the motor housing, guide bar, and chain.
- Periodically: Remove the side cover, guide bar, and chain to thoroughly clean the sprocket area and guide bar groove.
- No engine oil to change, no spark plug to replace, and no air filter or muffler to clean: Benefit of the brushless electric design.
4. Storage
- Always remove batteries before storing the chainsaw.
- Clean the chainsaw thoroughly and apply the guide bar cover.
- Store the chainsaw and batteries in a cool, dry, and secure location, out of reach of children.
- There is no need to drain fuel for storage, unlike gas-powered chainsaws.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Chainsaw does not start | Dead or improperly installed batteries; Power button not activated; Lock-off lever not depressed. | Charge and properly install batteries; Press and hold power button until green; Depress lock-off lever before squeezing trigger. |
| Chain does not move | Chain brake engaged; Chain too tight; Obstruction. | Disengage chain brake; Adjust chain tension; Remove obstruction (with batteries removed). |
| Poor cutting performance | Dull chain; Incorrect chain tension; Insufficient bar oil. | Sharpen or replace chain; Adjust chain tension; Refill bar oil reservoir. |
| Excessive vibration | Loose components; Damaged chain or guide bar. | Check all fasteners; Inspect chain and guide bar for damage and replace if necessary. |
