2. General Safety Instructions
Always follow basic safety precautions to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and serious personal injury. Keep this manual for future reference.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear safety glasses, hearing protection, head protection, heavy-duty gloves, and safety footwear. Consider leg protection (chaps) for added safety.
- Work Area Safety: Keep the work area clean and well-lit. Do not operate chainsaws in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust. Keep bystanders, children, and animals at a safe distance.
- Electrical Safety: Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces. Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions.
- Tool Use and Care: Do not force the tool. Use the correct tool for your application. Disconnect the battery pack before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing the tool. Store idle tools out of the reach of children.
- Kickback Prevention: Be aware of kickback, which can occur when the moving chain contacts an object at the upper quadrant of the guide bar nose. Always maintain a firm grip with both hands on the chainsaw.
- Maintenance: Maintain tools with care. Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories.
- Battery Pack Use: Recharge only with the charger specified by the manufacturer. Use power tools only with specifically designated battery packs.

4. Assembly and Setup
4.1 Battery Installation
- Ensure the chainsaw is switched off and the chain brake is engaged.
- Align the battery pack with the battery port on the chainsaw.
- Slide the battery pack into the port until it clicks securely into place.
- To remove, press the battery release button and slide the battery out.
4.2 Bar and Chain Installation
The DCM565N features tool-free bar and chain replacement.
- Ensure the battery is removed.
- Loosen the bar adjust locking knob (refer to Figure 1) and remove the sprocket cover.
- Carefully place the chain around the sprocket and guide bar, ensuring the cutting edges face the correct direction.
- Position the guide bar onto the chainsaw studs.
- Replace the sprocket cover and hand-tighten the bar adjust locking knob. Do not fully tighten yet.
4.3 Chain Tensioning
Proper chain tension is crucial for safety and performance.

Figure 3: Close-up of the chain tensioning knob.
- With the sprocket cover hand-tightened, use the chain tensioning knob (refer to Figure 1 and 3) to adjust the chain tension.
- The chain is correctly tensioned when it can be pulled away from the guide bar by approximately 2-3 mm at the center, but still snaps back into place.
- Once tension is correct, fully tighten the bar adjust locking knob to secure the bar and chain.
4.4 Adding Chain Oil
The chainsaw features automatic oiling, requiring regular refilling of the oil reservoir.
- Ensure the chainsaw is off and the battery is removed.
- Locate the oil reservoir cap.
- Unscrew the cap and fill the reservoir with high-quality bar and chain oil. Do not use waste oil or motor oil.
- Monitor the oil level indicator (refer to Figure 1) during operation and refill as needed.
- Securely replace the oil reservoir cap.
5. Operation
5.1 Starting the Chainsaw

Figure 4: Close-up of the trigger and safety switch.
- Ensure the battery is fully charged and properly installed.
- Hold the chainsaw firmly with both hands, one on the rear handle and one on the front handle.
- Engage the chain brake (if not already engaged) and then disengage it by pulling the front hand guard back towards the front handle.
- Press the safety switch (refer to Figure 4) with your thumb, then squeeze the trigger switch to start the chainsaw.
5.2 Stopping the Chainsaw
- Release the trigger switch. The chain will stop immediately.
- Engage the chain brake by pushing the front hand guard forward.
- For extended breaks or when transporting, remove the battery pack.
5.3 Cutting Procedures
Always plan your cut and ensure a stable footing.

Figure 5: DEWALT DCM565N Chainsaw in operation, cutting a log.
- Felling: For felling small trees, ensure the area is clear. Make a notch cut on the side of the tree in the direction of the fall, then a felling cut from the opposite side.
- Limbing: Remove branches from a fallen tree. Work from the bottom up, supporting the branch to prevent pinching.
- Bucking: Cut a fallen log into sections. Use a sawhorse or elevate the log to prevent the chain from hitting the ground. Be aware of potential pinch points.
- Avoid Kickback: Never cut with the tip of the guide bar. Always use the bottom or top edge of the bar.
5.4 Operational Safety
- Never operate the chainsaw with one hand. Always use both hands.
- Do not overreach. Maintain proper footing and balance at all times.
- Be aware of falling branches or logs.
- Do not operate the chainsaw when fatigued or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your chainsaw.
6.1 Chain Sharpening
A sharp chain is essential for efficient cutting and to prevent kickback.
- Sharpen the chain regularly or replace it when dull. Refer to the chain manufacturer's instructions for correct sharpening angles and file sizes.
- Always wear protective gloves when handling the chain.
6.2 Guide Bar Maintenance
- Clean the guide bar groove regularly to remove sawdust and debris.
- Flip the guide bar periodically to ensure even wear.
- Check for burrs on the guide bar rails and file them smooth if present.
6.3 Oil System Cleaning
- Periodically clean the oil inlet hole and oil passages to ensure proper lubrication.
- Inspect the oil level indicator for blockages.
6.4 General Cleaning and Storage
- After each use, clean the chainsaw thoroughly, removing sawdust and debris from the motor housing, chain, and bar.
- Store the chainsaw in a dry, secure place, out of reach of children. Ensure the chain brake is engaged and the battery is removed.
