Instruction Manual

Model: SMA Male to UHF Female Coaxial Jumper Cable

1. Introduction

This manual provides instructions for the proper installation, operation, and maintenance of your Amphenol SMA Male to UHF Female Coaxial Jumper Cable. This cable is designed to facilitate the connection of Yaesu handheld radio devices, equipped with an SMA female connector, to UHF mobile or base antennas that utilize a UHF male (PL-259) connector. Please read this manual thoroughly before use to ensure optimal performance and safety.

2. Safety Information

  • Ensure all power to connected devices is off before making or breaking connections.
  • Avoid bending the cable sharply, as this can damage the internal conductors and affect performance.
  • Do not expose the cable to extreme temperatures or harsh chemicals.
  • Keep connectors clean and free from dirt or moisture to maintain optimal signal integrity.
  • This cable is intended for radio frequency (RF) signal transmission only. Do not use for power transmission.

3. Package Contents

5. Setup

Follow these steps to properly connect your coaxial jumper cable:

  1. Identify Connectors: Locate the SMA female port on your Yaesu handheld radio (e.g., FT-65R, FT-891, FT-2900R) and the UHF male (PL-259) connector on your mobile or base antenna cable.
  2. Connect SMA Male: Carefully align the SMA male connector of the jumper cable with the SMA female port on your handheld radio. Gently screw the connector clockwise until it is finger-tight. Do not overtighten.
  3. Connect UHF Female: Align the UHF female (SO-239) connector of the jumper cable with the UHF male (PL-259) connector from your antenna cable. Screw the connector clockwise until it is finger-tight. Ensure a secure connection to prevent signal loss.
  4. Verify Connection: Once both ends are connected, gently tug on the cable near the connectors to ensure they are securely fastened.

6. Operating Instructions

Once the cable is securely connected between your handheld radio and antenna, you can proceed with normal operation of your radio equipment. The cable acts as a passive conduit for RF signals. Ensure your radio is configured for the correct frequency and power settings as per its own instruction manual.

7. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Periodically inspect connectors for dirt, dust, or corrosion. Clean with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn grime, a small amount of isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab can be used, ensuring connectors are completely dry before re-connecting.
  • Inspection: Regularly check the cable jacket for any signs of wear, cuts, or damage. Inspect connectors for bent pins or loose parts.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the cable coiled loosely in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Avoid tight coiling or kinking.

8. Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with signal transmission after connecting the cable, consider the following:

  • No Signal or Weak Signal:
    • Ensure both SMA and UHF connectors are fully tightened.
    • Check for any visible damage to the cable or connectors.
    • Verify that the antenna and radio are functioning correctly independently.
  • Intermittent Signal:
    • Loose connections are a common cause. Re-tighten both ends.
    • Inspect for internal cable damage that might not be visible externally.

If problems persist, consult a qualified technician or contact customer support.
