Introduction

The BOSS DR-01S Rhythm Partner is a percussion device specifically designed to provide rhythmic accompaniment for acoustic musicians. It offers a range of organic percussion sounds and versatile grooves to enhance performances with instruments such as acoustic guitar, ukulele, violin, and piano. The DR-01S features an integrated speaker for high-quality sound and supports battery-powered operation for portability.

Setup

1. Unpacking and Initial Inspection

Carefully remove the DR-01S from its packaging. Verify that all included components are present:

• AC adaptor
• AUX IN cable
• LINE OUT cable
• Optional footswitches (if purchased separately)

2. Power Supply

The DR-01S can be powered using the included AC adaptor or by batteries.

• AC Adaptor: Connect the supplied AC adaptor to the DC IN (PSB-1U) port on the rear panel of the unit and then to a standard AC outlet.
• Batteries: The unit requires 6 AA batteries (included). Open the battery compartment on the bottom of the unit and insert the batteries, ensuring correct polarity.

3. Connecting External Devices

• Audio Input (AUX IN): Connect an external audio player (e.g., smartphone) to the AUX IN jack using the supplied AUX IN cable to play along with music.
• Audio Output (LINE OUT): Connect the LINE OUT jack to an acoustic guitar amplifier or a larger sound system using the supplied LINE OUT cable for amplified sound.
• Footswitches (CTL 1,2): Connect optional footswitches (e.g., BOSS FS-5U, FS-6, FS-7) to the CTL 1,2 jack for hands-free control of various functions like start/stop, tap tempo, or sound triggering.

Operating Instructions

1. Power On/Off

Press the POWER button located on the right side of the control panel to turn the unit on or off.

2. Selecting Instrument Categories and Beats

The DR-01S features seven instrument categories, each with dedicated patterns:

• SHAKER/MARACAS
• TAMBOURINE/CLAVES
• H.CLAP/BONGO
• CONGA
• CAJON
• DRUMS
• METRONOME

Press the corresponding button for the desired instrument category. Use the BEAT buttons (< / >) to cycle through the available patterns within that category. Multiple instrument categories can be layered simultaneously.

3. Adjusting Tempo and Volume

• Tempo: Use the TEMPO buttons (< / >) to increase or decrease the playback speed. The current tempo is displayed on the LED screen.
• Volume: Use the VOLUME buttons (< / >) to adjust the overall output volume.

4. Variation and Count In

• Variation: Press the VARIATION button to switch between different rhythmic variations for the selected beat.
• Count In: Press the COUNT IN button to add a one-measure count-in before the rhythm starts, aiding in timing.

5. Tap Tempo

Press the TAP TEMPO button two or more times in rhythm to set the tempo manually.

6. Favorite Function

The DR-01S allows you to save up to 50 favorite rhythm combinations for quick recall. To save a combination, set your desired instruments, beats, tempo, and volume, then press and hold the FAVORITE button until the display indicates it has been saved. Use the FAVORITE buttons (< / >) to navigate through your saved favorites.

Maintenance

1. Cleaning

Wipe the unit with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using abrasive cleaners, waxes, or solvents, as these can damage the finish and internal components.

2. Storage

When not in use for extended periods, store the DR-01S in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If using batteries, remove them to prevent leakage and potential damage to the unit.

3. Battery Replacement

When the battery indicator shows low power or the unit behaves erratically, replace all 6 AA batteries with new ones. Ensure correct polarity when inserting new batteries.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your DR-01S, refer to the following common troubleshooting steps:

• No Power:
  • Ensure the AC adaptor is securely connected to both the unit and a working power outlet.
  • If using batteries, check that they are inserted correctly and are not depleted. Replace if necessary.
• No Sound:
  • Check the VOLUME level on the DR-01S.
  • If connected to an external amplifier or sound system via LINE OUT, ensure the external device is powered on and its volume is adjusted.
  • Verify that an instrument category is selected and a beat is playing.
• Controls Unresponsive:
  • Try turning the unit off and on again.
  • If the issue persists, remove and reinsert batteries, or disconnect and reconnect the AC adaptor.
• Rhythm is too fast/slow:
  • Adjust the TEMPO using the dedicated buttons.
  • Use the TAP TEMPO function to set a desired speed.
