1. Introduction
The HM Digital COM-300 is an advanced, waterproof combo meter designed for superior accuracy in measuring four critical water parameters: pH, Electrical Conductivity (EC), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), and temperature. This versatile device is ideal for various applications, including hydroponic systems, water gardens, and ponds.
Key features include:
- Waterproof Design: Ensures durability and reliability in wet environments.
- Digital Calibration: Provides easy and precise calibration for accurate results.
- Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC): Automatically adjusts readings for temperature discrepancies.
- Selectable Modes: Offers measurements in S, mS, and ppm scales.
- TDS Conversion Factors: Includes two different conductivity conversion factors (0.5 NaCl and 0.7 442TM) to accurately convert EC to TDS.

This manual provides comprehensive instructions for the setup, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your COM-300 meter to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
2. Setup
2.1 Unpacking
Carefully remove the COM-300 meter from its packaging. Verify that all components are present:
- HM Digital COM-300 Meter
- 2 x AAA Batteries
- Instruction Manual
2.2 Battery Installation
- Locate the battery compartment on the top of the meter.
- Open the battery compartment cover.
- Insert the 2 AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
- Securely close the battery compartment cover.
2.3 Initial Power On
Press the ON/OFF button to power on the meter. The display should illuminate, indicating the device is ready for use. The meter comes pre-calibrated from the factory, but it is recommended to check calibration periodically, especially before critical measurements.
3. Operating Instructions
3.1 Taking a Measurement
- Remove the protective cap from the electrode.
- Immerse the electrode into the sample solution up to the immersion line. Ensure no air bubbles are trapped around the electrode.
- Gently stir the meter in the solution to ensure a homogeneous sample.
- Wait for the reading to stabilize on the display.
- To hold the current reading, press the HOLD button. Press again to release.
- After measurement, rinse the electrode with distilled water and replace the protective cap.
3.2 Mode Selection
Press the MODE button to cycle through the different measurement parameters: pH, EC, TDS, and Temperature. The active mode will be indicated on the display.
3.3 Temperature Units
While in Temperature mode, press the TEMP button to switch between Celsius (°C) and Fahrenheit (°F).
3.4 TDS Conversion Factors
The COM-300 offers two common TDS conversion factors. To select between the 0.5 (NaCl) and 0.7 (442TM) factors, refer to the detailed instructions in the full user manual for specific steps.
3.5 Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC)
The meter automatically compensates for temperature variations, ensuring accurate readings across different sample temperatures. This feature is integrated and does not require manual adjustment during normal operation.
4. Maintenance
4.1 Cleaning the Electrode
After each use, thoroughly rinse the electrode with distilled or deionized water to prevent contamination and buildup. Gently wipe the electrode with a soft tissue if necessary, but avoid scratching the sensor.
4.2 Storage
Always replace the protective cap after cleaning. For optimal pH electrode longevity, store the electrode in a suitable storage solution (e.g., KCL solution) or pH 4 buffer solution. Never store the pH electrode dry.
4.3 Battery Replacement
When the battery indicator on the display shows low power, replace the 2 AAA batteries as described in the Setup section (2.2 Battery Installation).
4.4 Recalibration
Recalibration is crucial for maintaining accuracy. It is recommended to recalibrate:
- Before first use (after initial check).
- After prolonged storage.
- After frequent use (e.g., weekly or bi-weekly depending on usage).
- If readings appear inconsistent or inaccurate.
For detailed digital calibration steps using buffer solutions, please refer to the specific instructions provided in the full user manual.
5. Troubleshooting
5.1 Inaccurate or Inconsistent Readings
- Check Calibration: Ensure the meter is properly calibrated according to the manual.
- Clean Electrode: A dirty electrode can lead to erroneous readings. Clean it thoroughly as per maintenance instructions.
- Replace Batteries: Low battery power can affect accuracy. Replace batteries if needed.
- Proper Immersion: Ensure the electrode is fully immersed in the sample and no air bubbles are present.
5.2 Meter Freezing or Unresponsive Display
- Battery Check: Remove and reinsert the batteries to reset the device. Ensure batteries are fresh and correctly installed.
- Environmental Conditions: Ensure the meter is used within its specified operating temperature range.
5.3 Error Messages
If the meter displays an error message, consult the specific error code section in the full user manual for detailed explanations and solutions.
