Setup and Installation
Your Kenmore Top-Load Washer is designed for freestanding installation. Proper setup is crucial for optimal performance and safety.
Unpacking and Placement
- Carefully remove all packaging materials, including any shipping bolts or foam blocks.
- Place the washer on a firm, level floor. Ensure there is adequate space around the unit for ventilation and access.
- Verify the washer is level by adjusting the leveling feet. An unlevel washer can cause excessive vibration and noise.
Connections
The washer requires connections for water supply and drainage, as well as an electrical connection.
- Water Supply: Connect the hot and cold water inlet hoses to the corresponding valves and to the back of the washer. Ensure connections are tight to prevent leaks.
- Drain Hose: Securely attach the included drain hose to the washer and route it into a standpipe or laundry tub. Ensure the hose is not kinked and is properly secured to prevent dislodging during operation.
- Electrical Connection: Plug the power cord into a grounded 120-volt electrical outlet. Do not use extension cords.
Included Components: Drain Hose, Power Cord.

Loading the Washer

Figure 4: Interior view of the Kenmore Top-Load Washer during a wash cycle. This image shows the Dual Action Agitator in the center of the tub, surrounded by clothes and soapy water.
- Load items loosely around the Dual Action Agitator. Do not overload the machine, as this can hinder cleaning performance and cause issues.
- The Dual Action Agitator moves in two different directions to ensure even washing and efficient cleaning of ground-in dirt and tough stains.
Detergent and Additives
- Liquid HE Detergent: Use liquid HE detergent up to the first line of the cap.
- HE Powder Detergent or Pods: Add these directly to the tub before adding clothes to allow them to dissolve properly.
- Water Temperature: Use cooler water temperatures for most loads, but avoid "tap cold" as detergent requires at least 60-degree water to dissolve effectively.
- Extra Rinses: Consider adding up to 2 extra rinses for heavily soiled loads or to ensure all detergent is removed.
- Fabric Softener: If available, use the "Fabric Softener" option, which adds more water to the cycle for better distribution.

Maintenance
Regular maintenance helps ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your washer.
Clean Washer Cycle
- Utilize the dedicated "Clean Washer" cycle periodically to remove detergent residue and odors from the washer tub.
- If the washer is not new, it is recommended to run the clean washer cycle before first use.
General Cleaning
- Wipe down the exterior of the washer with a soft, damp cloth.
- Clean the detergent dispenser drawer regularly to prevent buildup.
- Leave the washer lid open after use to allow the interior to air dry and prevent mildew.
Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your washer.
White Residue on Clothes
If you notice white residue on your clothes after washing, consider the following tips:
- Use liquid HE detergent to the first line of the cap.
- If using HE powder detergent or pods, add them to the tub before adding clothes to ensure proper dissolution.
- Do not overload the machine.
- Use a cycle other than "Normal," such as "Heavy Duty" or "Bulky," and avoid "Express" when necessary.
- Utilize the "Deep Fill" option and/or the "Fabric Softener" option (if available) to add more water to the cycle.
- Use cooler water temperatures, but avoid "tap cold" as detergent requires at least 60-degree water to dissolve.
- Add up to 2 extra rinses to ensure all detergent is removed.
- If the washer is not new, use the "Clean Washer" cycle.
If these tips do not resolve the issue, a service technician should be contacted for evaluation.
General Issues
- Washer not starting: Ensure the power cord is securely plugged in and the lid is fully closed. Check if a circuit breaker has tripped.
- Excessive vibration/noise: Verify the washer is level. Ensure the load is balanced inside the tub.
- Water not draining: Check the drain hose for kinks or blockages. Ensure the drain pump filter (if accessible) is clean.
