5. Setup and Installation
Proper installation is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of your floor heating system. It is highly recommended that installation be performed by a qualified professional.
5.1 Pre-Installation Planning
- Layout Design: Plan the exact layout of the heating cable before installation. Ensure the cable does not cross itself and maintains consistent spacing. The cable cannot be cut or shortened.
- Area Measurement: Confirm the heated area matches the cable's square footage. This 11 Sq.Ft. system is designed for specific dimensions.
- Subfloor Preparation: Ensure the subfloor is clean, dry, and structurally sound.
- Membrane Compatibility: This system is compatible with various uncoupling membranes, including Ditra-Heat and Prodeso Floor Membrane (sold separately). These membranes can simplify installation and provide additional benefits.

Figure 5.1: Information on Warmall cable certifications (CSA LISTED) and compatibility with various uncoupling membranes, ensuring broad applicability and insurance coverage.
5.2 Cable Installation
- Secure Cable Strips: Use the provided cable strips to fix the heating cable to the subfloor or uncoupling membrane. Standard spacing is 4 inches, but 3-inch or 5-inch spacing can be used depending on heating requirements and cable length.
- Route Cable: Carefully route the heating cable according to your planned layout. Ensure the cable is not kinked, twisted, or damaged during this process.
- Cold Lead: The heating cable has a cold lead (non-heating portion) that connects to the thermostat. Ensure this lead is properly routed to the thermostat's electrical box.
5.3 Sensor Installation
- Floor Sensor Placement: Install one of the two floor sensors midway between two heating cable runs, ensuring it is centered within the heated area. The sensor should be placed in a conduit or sleeve to allow for future replacement if needed.
- Backup Sensor: The system includes a second floor sensor as a backup. It is recommended to install both sensors, routing the second one to the thermostat box but leaving it unconnected, for future use.

Figure 5.2: Image showing the two floor sensors included with the Warmall heating system, essential for accurate temperature measurement.
5.4 Electrical Connection and Testing
- Thermostat Wiring: Connect the heating cable's cold lead, floor sensor, and power supply to the UDG-4999 thermostat according to the wiring diagram provided with the thermostat. Ensure all connections are secure and comply with electrical codes.
- Installation Tester: Use the included installation tester to continuously monitor the heating cable's integrity during the entire installation process, including mortar application. The tester will alert you to any damage to the cable.
- Resistance Test: Measure the resistance of the heating cable and compare it to the specified resistance value for your model (refer to the sizing chart or thermostat manual).
- GFCI Test: After power-up, test the GFCI function of the thermostat to ensure proper operation.
6. Operating Instructions (UDG-4999 Thermostat)
The UDG-4999 programmable thermostat allows you to precisely control your floor heating system for optimal comfort and energy efficiency.

Figure 6.1: Close-up view of the UDG-4999 Programmable Thermostat display and control buttons.
6.1 Basic Operation
- Power On/Off: Use the power button (usually located on the side or bottom right) to turn the thermostat on or off.
- Temperature Display: The main screen displays the current room temperature and the set temperature.
- Adjusting Temperature: Use the UP and DOWN arrow buttons to manually adjust the desired floor temperature.
- Mode Selection: The thermostat typically offers different modes (e.g., Auto, Manual, Away). Refer to the thermostat's dedicated manual for detailed instructions on mode selection.
6.2 Programming Schedules
The UDG-4999 thermostat allows for advanced programming to set different temperatures at various times of the day, independently for each day of the week. This feature helps optimize energy consumption.
- Accessing Programming Menu: Typically involves pressing and holding a specific button (e.g., 'OK' or 'Menu') for a few seconds.
- Setting Time Periods: You can usually set up to 4 or more time periods per day (e.g., Morning, Day, Evening, Night) with corresponding desired temperatures.
- Day-Specific Programming: Adjust schedules for weekdays and weekends, or customize each day individually.
- Saving Settings: Always ensure you save your programmed settings before exiting the menu.
For detailed programming instructions, refer to the specific UDG-4999 thermostat manual included with your product.
7. Maintenance
The Warmall Floor Heating System is designed for long-term, maintenance-free operation once properly installed. However, general care can help ensure its longevity.
- Cleaning: Keep the thermostat display and buttons clean using a soft, dry cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Electrical Checks: Periodically (e.g., annually) have a qualified electrician inspect the electrical connections and GFCI functionality.
- Avoid Damage: Ensure that no heavy objects are dropped on the heated floor that could potentially damage the tiles or the underlying heating cable. Avoid drilling or nailing into the heated floor.
8. Troubleshooting
If you experience issues with your Warmall Floor Heating System, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
- No Heat:
- Check if the thermostat is powered on and set to a heating mode.
- Verify the set temperature is higher than the current floor temperature.
- Check the circuit breaker for the heating system.
- Ensure the GFCI has not tripped. Reset if necessary.
- Inspect thermostat wiring for loose connections (consult an electrician).
- Uneven Heating:
- This can indicate inconsistent cable spacing during installation. Ensure the cable was laid with uniform spacing (3", 4", or 5").
- Verify the floor sensor is correctly placed midway between two cable runs.
- Thermostat Display Not Working:
- Check power supply to the thermostat.
- Ensure the thermostat is securely mounted in its electrical box.
- GFCI Trips Frequently:
- This indicates a ground fault, potentially due to damaged heating cable or faulty wiring. Immediately disconnect power and contact a qualified electrician. Do not attempt to operate the system until the fault is resolved.
For issues not covered here, or if troubleshooting steps do not resolve the problem, contact Warmall customer support or a qualified electrician.
