3. Setup

3.1 Package Contents

Before starting, ensure all items are present in the package:

  • 1x KONNWEI KW680 OBD2 Scanner
  • 1x OBDII Cable
  • 1x USB Cable

3.2 Connecting the Scanner to Your Vehicle

  1. Locate the 16-pin Data Link Connector (DLC) in your vehicle. This is usually located under the dashboard on the driver's side.
  2. Ensure the vehicle's ignition is in the "ON" position, but the engine does not need to be running for most diagnostic functions.
  3. Plug the OBDII cable from the KW680 scanner into the vehicle's DLC port. The scanner will power on automatically.

Important: Always keep the vehicle's ignition ON when performing diagnostic tests to ensure proper communication with the vehicle's ECU.

4. Operating Instructions

The KW680 features a user-friendly interface with a color screen and navigation buttons.

4.1 Navigating the Menus

  • Use the UP and DOWN arrow buttons to scroll through menu options.
  • Press the ENTER button to select an option or confirm an action.
  • Press the ESC button to return to the previous screen or cancel an action.
  • The I/M button provides quick access to I/M Readiness status.

4.2 Reading and Clearing Trouble Codes

  1. From the Main Menu, select "Diagnostic" and press ENTER.
  2. Select "Read Codes" to view current, pending, and permanent DTCs.
  3. To clear codes, select "Erase Codes" and press ENTER. Confirm the action when prompted. This will turn off the Check Engine Light and reset emission monitors.

4.3 I/M Readiness Check

The I/M Readiness function checks if the various emission-related systems on the vehicle are operating correctly and are ready for inspection and maintenance testing.

  1. Press the dedicated I/M button on the scanner or navigate to "Diagnostic" -> "I/M Readiness".
  2. The screen will display the status of various monitors (e.g., Misfire, Fuel System, Comprehensive Component). A "PASS" or "OK" status indicates the monitor has completed its self-test.

4.4 Battery Check (BAT Check)

This function allows you to quickly check the voltage status of your vehicle's battery.

  1. From the Main Menu, select "BAT Check" and press ENTER.
  2. The scanner will display the current battery voltage.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Software Updates

The KONNWEI KW680 scanner supports lifetime free software updates to ensure compatibility with newer vehicles and to enhance its diagnostic capabilities. Updates are performed via a PC connection.

  1. Keep any button on the scanner pressed (except power button) and connect it to your PC using the provided USB cable.
  2. The scanner screen will display a website address for software downloads. Visit this website.
  3. Download and install the update software on your PC.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions in the update software to complete the update process. Ensure the device remains connected during the update.

Note: The update software is compatible with Windows XP, 7, 8, and 10. Mac OS is not supported for updates.

5.2 Cleaning and Storage

  • Clean the scanner's casing with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Store the device in a dry, cool environment, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Keep the OBDII and USB cables free from kinks or damage.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Scanner does not power on:
    • Ensure the OBDII cable is securely connected to the vehicle's DLC port.
    • Verify the vehicle's ignition is in the "ON" position.
    • Check the vehicle's battery for sufficient charge.
  • "Link Error" or "Communication Error" message:
    • Confirm the OBDII cable is properly connected.
    • Ensure the vehicle's ignition is ON.
    • Verify that your vehicle is OBDII compliant (most vehicles from 1996 onwards). Some older or specific models may not be fully compatible.
    • Try connecting the scanner to another OBDII compliant vehicle to rule out a scanner issue.
  • Unable to update software:
    • Ensure the USB cable is securely connected to both the scanner and the PC.
    • Verify your PC's operating system is Windows XP, 7, 8, or 10. Mac OS is not supported.
    • Temporarily disable any antivirus or firewall software that might interfere with the update process.
