2. Safety Information

Always adhere to the following safety precautions to prevent injury and damage to the instrument:

3. Setup

3.1 Unpacking and Inspection

Upon receiving your Megger MIT525-US, carefully unpack all components and inspect for any signs of damage. The package should include the main unit, test leads, and power cable.

3.2 Powering the Instrument

The MIT525-US operates from line power (85 to 265 V, 50/60 Hz) or its internal lithium-ion battery. The battery charges automatically when connected to line power, even during operation.

  1. Connect the power cable to the instrument's power input and a suitable AC outlet.
  2. Allow approximately 2.5 hours for a full battery charge. A 0.5-hour charge provides approximately 1 hour of testing.

3.3 Connecting Test Leads

Connect the provided test leads to the appropriate terminals on the instrument. The MIT525-US features dedicated terminals for positive (+), negative (-), and guard connections.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Basic Insulation Resistance (IR) Test

The MIT525-US offers resistance measurement up to 10 TΩ for 5 kV models.

  1. Power On: Turn the rotary switch to the desired test voltage (e.g., 500 V, 1 kV, 2.5 kV, 5 kV). The instrument will power on and display the selected voltage.
  2. Connect to DUT: Connect the test leads to the Device Under Test (DUT) according to safety guidelines.
  3. Select Test Voltage: Use the voltage selection knob to fine-tune the test voltage in 10 V steps (50 V to 1 kV) or 25 V steps (1 kV to max test voltage).
  4. Initiate Test: Press the TEST button. The instrument will apply the test voltage and display the insulation resistance.
  5. Read Measurement: The digital/analog display will show the resistance value.
  6. Terminate Test: Release the TEST button. The instrument will automatically discharge the DUT.

4.2 Advanced Diagnostic Tests

The MIT525-US supports various diagnostic tests including Polarization Index (PI), Dielectric Absorption Ratio (DAR), Dielectric Discharge (DD), Step Voltage (SV), and Ramp tests. These tests are crucial for assessing insulation quality and trending.

Refer to the on-screen menu and detailed instructions within the instrument's internal software for specific parameter settings and interpretation of results for advanced tests.

4.3 Voltmeter Function

The instrument includes a dedicated voltmeter function (30 V to 660 V) with frequency measurement to check for induced voltages on the circuit before testing.

  1. Turn the rotary switch to the V (Voltmeter) position.
  2. Connect the test leads to the circuit.
  3. The display will show the measured voltage and frequency.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning

Clean the instrument's exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure no moisture enters the instrument.

5.2 Battery Care

The lithium-ion battery is designed for extended capacity and rapid charging. For optimal battery life, avoid prolonged storage in a fully discharged state. Recharge the battery regularly.

5.3 Calibration

Regular calibration by authorized service centers is recommended to maintain the instrument's accuracy and performance. Refer to Megger's official website or contact support for calibration services.

6. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Instrument does not power on.Discharged battery or no AC power.Connect to AC power and allow battery to charge.
Inaccurate readings.Poor lead connections, environmental factors, or instrument out of calibration.Check lead connections. Ensure proper environmental conditions. Consider professional calibration.
