Always observe the following safety precautions to prevent injury or damage to the UPS and connected equipment.

  • Electrical Safety: This unit contains high voltage. Do not open the casing. Servicing should only be performed by qualified personnel.
  • Battery Safety: The UPS contains sealed lead-acid batteries. Do not dispose of batteries in a fire, as they may explode. Do not open or mutilate batteries. Released electrolyte is harmful to the skin and eyes.
  • Environment: Install the UPS in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and excessive moisture.
  • Grounding: Ensure the UPS is properly grounded to prevent electric shock.
  • Overload: Do not overload the UPS. Refer to the specifications for maximum load capacity.

3. Product Overview

The AEG Protect C. 1000 UPS system is designed for reliable power protection. Below are key components and their functions.

3.1 Front Panel and Display

The front panel features an intuitive LCD display that provides real-time status information, including input/output voltage, frequency, battery charge level, and load percentage. Control buttons below the display allow navigation through menus and settings.

UPS Display Normal Operation

Figure 2: Close-up of the UPS display during normal operation, showing input (Eingang) and output (Ausgang) voltage and frequency, battery charge, and load.

The display provides critical operational data. In normal operation, it shows stable input and output values, indicating the UPS is providing clean power to connected devices.

UPS Display During Power Outage

Figure 3: Close-up of the UPS display during a power outage, showing 0V input and the system running on battery power.

When the main power fails, the display will indicate 0V input and show the UPS operating on battery power, along with the estimated remaining runtime.

3.2 Rear Panel and Connections

The UPS can be expanded with up to two additional battery modules to extend runtime, connecting via the dedicated external battery port on the rear panel.

4. Setup

4.1 Unpacking and Inspection

Carefully unpack the UPS and all accessories. Inspect for any shipping damage. If damage is found, do not operate the unit and contact your dealer.

4.2 Placement

Place the UPS on a stable, flat surface in a clean, well-ventilated area. Ensure adequate clearance around the unit for proper airflow. Avoid locations with excessive dust, humidity, or extreme temperatures.

4.3 Connecting to Power

  1. Connect the supplied mains connection cable to the AC input port on the rear of the UPS.
  2. Plug the other end of the mains cable into a grounded wall outlet.
  3. Allow the UPS to charge for at least 8 hours before initial use to ensure full battery capacity.

4.4 Connecting Devices

  1. Connect your critical equipment (e.g., computer, monitor, network devices) to the AC output sockets on the rear panel of the UPS using the provided load connection cables.
  2. Do not connect laser printers or other high-surge devices to the UPS output, as they may overload the unit.

4.5 Initial Power-On

Press and hold the power button on the front panel for a few seconds until the display illuminates and the UPS powers on. The UPS will perform a self-test and then enter normal operation mode.

4.6 Software Installation

Install the CompuWatch software from the included CD on your computer. Connect the UPS to your computer using the supplied USB communication cable. The software allows for monitoring UPS status, configuring settings, and performing graceful shutdowns during extended power outages.

5. Operating

5.1 Understanding the Display

The LCD display provides real-time information about the UPS status. Key indicators include:

  • Input Voltage/Frequency: Shows the incoming utility power status.
  • Output Voltage/Frequency: Shows the power being supplied to connected devices.
  • Battery Level: Indicates the remaining battery charge.
  • Load Level: Shows the percentage of the UPS's capacity being used by connected devices.
  • Operating Mode: Indicates if the UPS is in Online, Battery, ECO, or Bypass mode.

5.2 Normal Operation (Online Mode)

In normal operation, the UPS continuously converts incoming AC power to DC to charge the batteries, and then converts it back to clean, stable AC power for your devices. This VFI (Voltage and Frequency Independent) Double Conversion technology provides the highest level of power protection.

5.3 Battery Mode

When utility power fails or fluctuates outside acceptable limits, the UPS automatically switches to battery power without interruption. The display will indicate battery mode, and an audible alarm may sound. The runtime depends on the load and battery charge level.

5.4 ECO Mode

The UPS supports ECO mode, which allows it to operate with higher efficiency by bypassing the double conversion process when utility power is stable. This reduces energy consumption and heat generation. The UPS will automatically switch to online mode if power quality degrades.

5.5 Frequency Converter Mode

The UPS can operate as a frequency converter, allowing it to output a different frequency (e.g., 60Hz) than the input frequency (e.g., 50Hz). This feature is useful for specific equipment requirements.

5.6 Shutdown Procedures

  • Manual Shutdown: Press and hold the power button until the UPS powers off. Ensure all connected devices are safely shut down first.
  • Software Shutdown: Use the CompuWatch software to initiate a graceful shutdown of the UPS and connected systems, especially during extended power outages.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Battery Care

The internal batteries are sealed lead-acid and require no maintenance. However, to maximize battery life:

  • Keep the UPS connected to power to ensure batteries remain fully charged.
  • Avoid frequent deep discharges.
  • Store the UPS in a cool, dry place if not in use for extended periods, and recharge every 3-6 months.
  • Batteries are consumable items and will eventually need replacement. Contact qualified service personnel for battery replacement.

6.2 Cleaning

Clean the exterior of the UPS with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners. Ensure ventilation openings are free from dust and obstructions.

6.3 Storage

If storing the UPS for an extended period, ensure the batteries are fully charged, then disconnect it from power. Recharge the batteries every three months to prevent permanent damage.

7. Troubleshooting

This section provides solutions to common issues you might encounter with your UPS.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
UPS does not power on.No input power; Battery deeply discharged; Power button not held long enough.Check mains connection and wall outlet; Allow UPS to charge for several hours; Press and hold power button for 3-5 seconds.
UPS beeps continuously in normal mode.Overload condition; Fan error; Internal fault.Reduce connected load; Check display for error codes; Contact support if alarm persists.
Short battery runtime.Batteries not fully charged; Batteries nearing end of life; Overload.Allow UPS to charge for 8+ hours; Consider battery replacement; Reduce connected load.
UPS switches to battery mode frequently.Unstable input power; Sensitivity setting too high.Check utility power quality; Adjust UPS input sensitivity via software (if available).

If the problem persists after trying these solutions, please contact AEG customer support.
