4. Operating Instructions
4.1 Basic Direction Finding
- Open the Compass: Unfold the compass completely so the cover and sighting lens are extended.
- Hold Level: Hold the compass horizontally at waist level. Use the built-in level indicator to ensure it is perfectly flat.
- Orient to North: Allow the magnetic needle to settle. The red end of the needle typically points to magnetic North. Rotate your body and the compass until the North mark on the dial aligns with the North-pointing needle.
- Read Bearings: Once oriented, you can read the bearing of any object by aligning it with the sighting line and reading the corresponding degree on the dial through the sighting lens.
