4. Setup and Assembly

Before operating the chainsaw, proper assembly and setup are crucial for safety and performance.

4.1. Unpacking

Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Inspect for any damage during transit. Ensure all listed components are present. (Note: Battery and charger are sold separately and are not included with the chainsaw unit.)

4.2. Guide Bar and Chain Installation

  1. Ensure the battery is removed from the chainsaw.
  2. Remove the chain cover by loosening the retaining nuts/knob.
  3. Place the chain around the sprocket and guide bar, ensuring the cutting edges face the correct direction (refer to chain markings).
  4. Fit the guide bar onto the studs, aligning the chain drive links with the groove in the guide bar.
  5. Replace the chain cover and lightly tighten the retaining nuts/knob. Do not fully tighten yet.

4.3. Chain Tension Adjustment

Proper chain tension is vital. A chain that is too loose can derail, and a chain that is too tight can cause excessive wear and damage.

Figure 4.1: This image highlights the mechanism for adjusting chain tension and securing the guide bar. Correct chain tension is vital for safe and effective cutting.

  1. With the chain cover lightly tightened, use the chain tensioning knob/screw to adjust the chain tension.
  2. The chain should be snug against the underside of the guide bar, but still able to be pulled freely by hand. There should be no sag on the underside of the bar.
  3. Once tension is correct, fully tighten the retaining nuts/knob on the chain cover.

4.4. Lubrication (Filling the Oil Tank)

The GREENCUT GS560L features an automatic and adjustable oil pump for constant guide and chain lubrication. Use only high-quality bar and chain oil.

  1. Ensure the chainsaw is on a level surface and the battery is removed.
  2. Unscrew the oil tank cap.
  3. Fill the oil tank with appropriate bar and chain oil. Avoid overfilling.
  4. Securely replace the oil tank cap.
  5. Check for leaks before operation.

4.5. Battery Insertion

The chainsaw is powered by the GREENCUT 56V MAX battery system.

  • Limbing: Cut small branches from larger logs. Be aware of spring-back from tensioned branches.
  • Felling Small Trees: For small trees, make a directional notch cut first, then a felling cut from the opposite side, slightly above the notch. Always ensure a clear escape path.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your chainsaw. Always remove the battery before performing any maintenance.

6.1. Cleaning the Chainsaw

  • After each use, clean sawdust, chips, and debris from the chainsaw body, guide bar, and chain.
  • Use a brush or compressed air. Avoid using water directly on electrical components.

6.2. Chain Sharpening

A sharp chain is essential for safe and efficient cutting. Sharpen the chain regularly or replace it when dull.

  • Use a round file of the correct diameter for your chain (refer to chain specifications).
  • File each cutter uniformly, maintaining the original angles.
  • Ensure depth gauges are also maintained.

6.3. Guide Bar Maintenance

  • Clean the guide bar groove to remove sawdust and debris.
  • Flip the guide bar periodically to ensure even wear.
  • Check for burrs on the guide bar rails and file them smooth if present.

6.4. Oil Tank Cleaning

Periodically drain and clean the oil tank to remove any sludge or contaminants.

6.5. Battery Care and Storage

  • Store batteries in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
