1. Introduction
The Benetech GT235 Film/Coating Thickness Gauge is designed for quick and effective measurement of coating thickness. It accurately measures non-metallic coatings on non-magnetic metal substrates and non-magnetic coatings on magnetic metal substrates. The device automatically identifies the substrate type (magnetic or non-magnetic). This instrument is suitable for applications in automobile manufacturing, metal processing, chemical industry, and commodity inspection.
This manual provides detailed instructions for the proper use, setup, operation, and maintenance of your GT235 thickness gauge. Please read it thoroughly before operating the device.
2. Product Overview
The GT235 thickness gauge offers a range of features to ensure precise and versatile measurements.
Key Features:
- Measures non-magnetic coating thickness on magnetic metal substrates.
- Measures non-metallic coating thickness on non-magnetic metal substrates.
- Automatic identification of magnetic (Fe) and non-magnetic (NFe) metal substrates.
- Supports single measurement, continuous measurement and differential measurement modes.
- Offers Zero-point calibration, Offset Calibration, and basic calibration options.
- Switchable metric (µm, mm) and imperial (mil) units of measurement.

3. Setup
3.1 Battery Installation
- Locate the battery compartment on the back of the device (refer to Figure 2.2).
- Slide open the battery compartment cover.
- Insert two 1.5V AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
- Close the battery compartment cover securely.
3.2 Powering On/Off
- To power on, press any button. The device will perform a self-test and display the last measurement mode.
- The device features an automatic shutdown function to save power. It will power off after a period of inactivity.
4. Operating Instructions
4.1 Basic Measurement
- Ensure the device is powered on.
- Place the probe perpendicularly and firmly onto the surface of the coated material.
- The measurement reading will be displayed on the screen. The device will automatically identify the substrate type (Fe for magnetic, NFe for non-magnetic).
- Lift the probe from the surface to prepare for the next measurement.
4.2 Measurement Modes
Press the MODE button to cycle through different measurement modes:
- Single Measurement (SNG): Displays one measurement at a time.
- Continuous Measurement (CONT): Continuously takes and displays measurements as the probe is moved across the surface.
- Differential Measurement (DIF): Measures the difference between the current reading and a set reference value.
4.3 Unit Selection
Press the UNIT button to switch between metric (µm, mm) and imperial (mil) units. The selected unit will be displayed on the screen.
4.4 Calibration
Calibration ensures measurement accuracy. It is recommended to calibrate the device when using it in different environments or if significant temperature differences occur.
- Zero-point Calibration:
- Place the probe directly on a bare, uncoated metal substrate (magnetic or non-magnetic, depending on the measurement type).
- Press and hold the CAL button until "0.0" or "CAL" appears, indicating zero calibration is complete.
- Offset Calibration:
- Perform zero-point calibration first.
- Place a calibration foil of known thickness on the bare substrate.
- Place the probe on the calibration foil.
- Adjust the displayed value to match the known thickness of the foil using the UNIT/MODE buttons (if applicable, specific steps may vary by firmware).
- Confirm the calibration.
- Basic Calibration:
- This typically involves calibrating with multiple known thickness foils across the measurement range. Refer to the specific calibration kit instructions for detailed steps.
5. Maintenance
5.1 Cleaning
- Wipe the device body with a soft, dry cloth.
- Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents, as they may damage the casing or display.
- Keep the probe tip clean and free from debris to ensure accurate measurements.
5.2 Storage
- When not in use for extended periods, remove the batteries to prevent leakage.
- Store the device in its protective case in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
5.3 Battery Replacement
- When the low battery indicator appears on the display, replace both AAA batteries promptly.
- Follow the battery installation steps outlined in Section 3.1.
6. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Device does not power on. | Dead or incorrectly installed batteries. | Check battery polarity; replace batteries. |
| Inaccurate readings. |
|
|
| Display shows "Err" or similar error. | Measurement out of range or sensor issue. | Ensure measurement is within specified range; restart device. If persistent, contact support. |
| Device does not detect substrate type. | Substrate material is not standard magnetic/non-magnetic metal, or coating is too thick. | Verify substrate material; ensure coating thickness is within range. |
